Opie's Mother....

In either the original series or this movie, was there ever a mention of who Opie's mother was, how she and Andy met and what happened to her? I remember Aunt Bee calling Andy a "widower" once when Opie was very young, but with the shows that reminisced about Andy's high school days and he and Barney's reminiscing about dates in high school, was there ever a mention of who Andy married? Would love to know.

reply

Andy was indeed a widower. In one episode Barney talks about being Opie's Godfather and "standing up" for Andy when he married. In the pilot (an episode of "The Danny Thomas Show") Andy talks to Opie about being sad when Opie's mother died when he was just a baby.

welll...opie's mother probably was andy's sister or cousin.....ya'all know...suthern hospitality and all

...I don't go along with that. It's generally in remote, low-populated areas where the rural poor have been known to engage in such proclivities. But Mayberry and its citizens don't fit in with the "Southern imbred" sterotype, except for a few of "The Andy Griffith Show's" recurring characters who live farther out of town...

And, by the way, it's "INBRED" not "IMBRED". "Imbred" is not a word.

Well, excuse me for making a typo, "Mister Grammar & Spelling Cop!" You DO realize that "N" and "M" are immediately adjacent to one another on the keyboard, right? And that people DO make mistakes, even accomplished typists (of which, I ain't one of them), right?

You've just opened yourself up for being corrected by me, should I find any typos or outright indications of grammatical/spelling ignorance on your part. See you around!

Actually, lots of us are grammar nazis, Vinidici, (although I do agree that your error was a typo instead of a grammatical error) so you'd better watch that keyboard as I will correct you in a New York minute. Further, if you find a grammatical error in any of my posts, feel free to correct me. Unlike many, I don't mind a correction as it means I will never make that mistake again.

BTW, I'm from the South, and while I know (or at least assume) that you were joking, let me assure you that incest is frowned upon here as much as it is anywhere else.

Now excuse me while I go have sex with my cous--ummm, boyfriend.

It is if you're the kind of hillbilly the poster who posted that was talking about.

reply

WOW - you're quite ignorant.

Whom are you addressing with that little insult of yours, danielle-cassels?

if you comeback here after almost 3 years..........I am sure by the "positioning" that the reply was to the post that initially suggested that his first wife was a relative, so I basically agree with the insult given by Danielle

To Bodoe5783-1 it sounds more like you yankee liberals. Free love, no responsibility. Let the taxpayer foot the bill and the baby's father could be anybody including a relative.

I know plenty of southern Republicans who do that as well ...

reply

There are crappy jerks in every part of the country. The Republicans you're talking about are the same turncoats who kiss Obama's sorry ass while pretending to be conservative. You know who I'm talking about. The neocon phonies who side with Obama while attacking Trump. It's just that there are more loony libturds in the northeast and west coast than in Dixie or the Midwest.

Oddly Andy never did mention his dead wife after the pilot. I suppose the show being a comedy had something to do with that.

No need to dwell on the obvious and sad stuff.

But you would think he'd mention her more or have pictures of her or she'd have been related to other people in town who would talk about her.

reply

We can probably assume that Andy would have his melancholy moments, whenever contemplating his deceased wife, but those scenes aren't chronicled into the show because--well, like you said, it IS a comedy, after all!

There actually is an episode of the Andy Griffith Show where Andy is talking to Opie about love. Opie asks him, "Is that the way you felt about my Maw?" and Andy tells him yes.
