Those are some of the first that came to my mind as well, but I thought of a few more for you.

North Shore (1987) - A sort of "Karate Kid" goes surfing. A college kid from land locked Arizona goes to Hawaii to surf and his ways clash with some of the local surfers. Meanwhile he befriends a surfing guru/spiritual advisor who essentially becomes the kid's Mr. Miyagi. Toss in a bully antagonist, a forbidden romance and a montage ready power pop soundtrack you've got all the elements of an 80's underdog tale.

BMX Bandits (1983) - Co-stars a very young Nicole Kidman(!?)! Been a loooooooooooong time since I've seen it so I'll let the website "Fast-Rewind" set up the plot for me.

Dish Dogz (2005) - A bit more recent. Revolves around skateboarding. I caught the trailer recently on the "Peaceful Warrior" DVD but I haven't seen it. Every indication is it's a similar type of story to the ones on our list.

I could of sworn there was a movie called "BMX'' but I can't find it anywhere!

That is "BMX Bandits". It was another that had multiple release names.

Where I grew up it was "BMX:The Movie"

I LOVE Dish Dogs.. but no. I would not put it in this category at all.. they do surf.. but its more a they happen to surf and is not a major part of the flick.

I did want to add.. its not so much about the competition like RAD or Thrashin'.. but I would highly recommend "Lords of Dogtown" a dramatic version of the documentary "Dogtown and the Z-boys" I think.. sorry long day at work, and too lazy to look it up.. but its about the Zephyr skateboard company and how skateboarding really took a big leap during the 80s..

also.. I want to say Tony Hawk or was it Mike McGill .. I know I could look it up but lazy.. did some stunt work for the opening of "Police Academy 4".

Just an FYI: I actually read a BIT closer on the DISH DOGZ.. not Dish Dogs, so two very different flicks. ok.. This is DishDOGZ... not Dish Dogs.. so throw out MOST of my comment.. lol

Cool, I'll have to check them both out. Has there ever been a really good documentary about the BMX culture of the late 70s-80s?

There was a Doc I saw a while back about a skater named Gator.... I cant think of the exact title, but I know Gator was in the title... It was pretty cool even though it is more about skateboarding. It really showed how it went from nothing to be totally blown up and went from the marginalized group of kids to mainstream... have fun...

Btw.... I looked it up, and it is Stoked: The Rise and Fall of Gator.

Do not be scared you do not know it all, Just look it up...

Pretty sure that whichever Police Academy is Citizens on Patrol has Tony Hawk and David Spade as a pair of skateboarders who become citizen cops because they get in trouble for RAD THRASHIN.

Yes Jessie James narrated "the history of BMX" it's awesome a must see!!

I grew up watching all the movies you mentioned in this list and wanted to throw a few movies that you may have forgotten or haven't saw...not exactly same as Rad but close enough...

Winners Take All (1987)
Airborne (1993, very similar to Rad)
Race the Sun (1996) I know this one came late but a fun movie
