Am I the only one that frequents this board?

Just wondering.

reply

I do as well from time to time. RAD is one of my all time favorite movies. One of the greatest soundtracks ever as well.

reply

Rad is one of the greatest movies of all time! Definitely agree about the soundtrack.

reply

No, but I can certainly come on once a week to post THUNDER IN YOUR HEART!

EVERY MOVE IS LIKE A LIGHTNING!

Those foolish enough to move from canada to america increase the average I.Q. of both countries

reply

I check this board frequently and I've started a number of posts. Traffic is hit or miss depending on factors like DVD rumors, Bill Allen appearing Tosh etc.

Speaking of DVD rumors, if there any truth to any of them?

reply

Bill Allen said in an interview last week that the DVD is coming sometime in the near future. He said the same thing a few years ago, so who knows? Apparently Talia is trying to reacquire the rights. He also said if she does this not only will we get an official DVD, but a sequel too! I wouldn't get real excited though. Bill has been saying this stuff for a number of years.

reply

I hope we at least get a blu-ray with a ton of extras, especially a gag reel.

Someone needs to make it happen, there are tons of fans out there, I mean come on we had a petition with a huge number of signatures.

reply

I know. Its absolutely ridiculous that "Rad" has yet to be released on DVD. I always thought it was a licensing issue, but apparently Talia owns the rights and has for years. What in the world is she waiting for? Does she not like making money?

reply

A DVD or BD release would be awesome, but I'm not sure about a sequel... It seems like it might hurt the legacy of the original. But that's just my opinion.

Doogie--Do you have a link to the Bill Allen interview you mentioned?

This is from a few weeks back. This isn't the first time he talked about the DVD or the potential sequel, but what he says here is the same. Enjoy

reply

Awesome! Thanks!

reply

No prob! I hope he is right about the DVD. This needs to happen this year.

reply

This movie, though forgotten in the mainstream, could stand the test of time. My kids, 7 and 9 at the time of this posting and both girls to boot, love this movie. It just goes to show it's a great underdog story told in a really fun way. I hate to see movies like this fade into obscurity.

reply

I bought the DVD about five years ago off EBAY or some other website. It looks like it was just ripped from a VHS copy but it is still amazing none the less.

reply

If Gymkata, which I own, can get released on DVD, why can't Rad?

reply

I usually check in every once in a while. Hope to hear about a DVD soon. I can't even find a VHS.

I emailed Bill Allen a few years back and he actually replied. Very nice guy, but said back then that the DVD should be out later this year (that was 2008). That was when BillAllenRad.com was still a working site.

Try this email for Bill: [email protected]

I emailed him back and forth and this address was where all of his replies came from.

When I met Bart Connor last he said something about Rad on dvd. I thought he said someone was doing commentary for it. Thats been a few years though.

If anyone's here because they are 80s BMX fans, they should check out BMXmuseum.com. It's probably the greatest showcasing of 80s BMX bikes on the net (has 90s and other eras, too), and its got a really cool message board community with a big following for this movie.

reply

I'm a little ashamed that I don't frequent this board.

reply

It's ok...you're not missing much, unfortunately.

reply

I keep checking it out hoping there will be some news on a DVD release someday.

reply

There are pirated copies on eBay and elsewhere on the web. Also you can currently see the movie in It's entirety on YouTube.

reply

Man, even the pirated copies are going for upwards of $30.00 on eBay right now. I bought a copy on iOffer a few years back for $15.00 or so (Including a copy of the soundtrack). Granted the ones on eBay now have fancy slipcover art and mine was just a plain DVD with RAD scrawled on it in marker, but still.

I don't normally support buying non licensed items, but this movie has been out of print for over well over 20 years. Enough was enough. Besides, when/if an official copy is ever released I'll be the first one in line.

I hope theres a dvd out at some point. I got the original copy on vhs that and a few other 80s movies that i love. This movie would fly off the shelves at walmart. GARUNTEED

reply

I loved this movie so much as a kid I wore out a VHS copy.

reply

A couple of weeks ago I was at a thrift store and my heart leapt when I saw a VHS copy of RAD. And for only .99. Heck they go for upwards of $15.00 on eBay.

I got a great copy. It was recorded off INHD which I believe is a Canadian HiDef channel?? It's a crisp and clear copy. If is all that's ever available I am happy. Though an official release would b awesome.

reply

I'm not sure if it's Canadian or not, but the version I have is also INHD. It is a really nice copy (save for the ever-present INHD logo in the lower right corner) and likely looks and sounds as good as any official relase we would get, but I want to see it hit DVD for three reasons 1.) So that the rights holders and people involved can receive the money they deserve 2.) For the special features 3.) So that a new generation will be more likely to discover it.

Well, Rad is a dangerous game of nostalgia. But when you objectively analyze the decade itself, nostalgia is not the key element. Otherwise, younger generations would not find and discover such excitement about 80’s popular culture. Sure, someone could claim the same for his/her favorite decade. But statistic is not game of chance, and it is well know that 60’s and 80’s memorabilia is unmatched by any other decade in sales.

Just hearing Break the Ice (RAD theme) sends both excitement and sadness in the same time. Wonderful times, great movie. Not pretentious, not claiming to redefine art, yet like a great 80’s song, you can never mistake it for other. As I often say, movies where bigger then people then, today people are bigger then movies, and if you haven’t slept for too long; cinema is really no more, it is has become television!

Here we have 80’s movie, one could easily try to compare with anything today from the same genre, but, on a piece of paper, nothing would convince you it would make a hit, or it would be almost engraved in popular collective of 80’s and decades to come, as Rad has proven. It was easy to make even small movies legendary, when times were more interesting, and the world was more fun place to be.

Don’t mistake nostalgia, it wont help you with Rad. Rad is the portal to 80’s, to better times, and you don’t even have to be child of 80’s to discover the keys.

Ah, this is where I stop, as I say, 80’s, dangerous game of heart
