what was he wearing?

I noticed in the film Kevin had wrapped around this right leg some sort of band? I'd like to know what's the technical name or whatever its called and if they are still used today?
Thanks all.

It's a strap to keep your pants out of the chain. They are quit common among bike commuters who do not want to get their work pants dirty or torn, however, you usually only see older people using them. Messengers and younger people just roll up their pant leg or wear pants that do not get caught in the chain i.e. shins or slim pants. I think one could even argue that this is one reason slim pants are so popular in cities like New York and San Francisco.

I'm not sure what the technical name is--maybe just "pant leg strap". You can buy metal and reflective ones on eBay.

They are just called ankle straps. You put it around your pantleg to keep your cuff from getting chewed up in the front sprocket. Any bike shop ought to have them.

FYI, the "front sprocket" is called the chain ring. The gears in back are referred to as the cassette. I've never used an ankle strap, but I only ride recreationally, so I'm never in long pants. Hell, you never see em down here in Houston...it's usually too hot to wear pants on a bike!

In England we use bicycle clips to keep our trouser legs from the chain.
