I live right near the lake/pond

I have lived all my life very close to the location they used for the pond. To my knowledge its still full of water. I remember going there as a kid, when I saw this movie I flipped out! Great Aussie movie.

Yes, and I believe the location they used was the Moorooduc Quarry if I'm not mistaken.

Those pictures are great and, although I watched the movie last time at least 10 years, I recognized the place. Thanks a lot!

That's tops. It's cool to know that Quarry is still around.

I also live very close to the quarry, it is in Mt.Eliza, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. however the actual pool of water is now fenced off for some reason I'm not sure of, you can get around it though :p its a cool site. I remember seeing this movie at a very young age maybe about 7, then my parents took me to the site after seeing it, was a very surreal experience at that age.

reply

Yeah, I live there too.

When we were kids (about age 11 or 12), a mate had a birthday party, and we went out to the quarry and a few of the guys climbed up one of the cliff faces.
One of the guys fell, got a concussion and amnesia, and couldn't even remember some of our names or where he lived for a while.

We must be neighbours. Yes, it's the Moorooduc Quarry in Mt Eliza. I wrote the screenplay, live in Mt Eliza and have 6 Mountie daughters. In researching the story I found a lot of great old photos, including when the quarry was empty and had a train track winding to the bottom. It was owned by the Armstrong family, who now own a shoe shop in Frankston.

You've probably heard stories that the quarry is "bottomless". Before filming, we had to get a police diver in to survey the bottom. It's actually quite shallowing, dipping to a maximum of about 40 feet over at the end where the cliff is. This was the only spot where stuntman Robbie Porter (doubling for Henry Thomas) could do the cliff-jump.

Boy, the sight of that quarry lit up at night like the MCG, with choppers and wave-machines and "monsters" and about a thousand locals lining the clifftop to watch, was a proud moment for me.

I could tell you a thousand stories about it, but I'll leave you with a piece of triva. Every time the camera goes underwater, those are scenes that were directed by me, with the famous Ron Taylor on camera. It was impossible to shoot underwater at the quarry, so we borrowed a friend's backyard pool, dressed it out with scum and car bodies, heated the water to bath temperature, and covered the surface in black plastic. In the movie, where Henry is walking around on the quarry floor, he's actually just inches underwater in the Timmermans' backyard pool, with me holding his hand for safety. He was a great little actor.

It was actually filmed mostly in Woods Point East of Melbourne. http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=woods+point+victoria&sll=34.270191,-118.288381&sspn=0.002177,0.00515&ie=UTF8&ll=-37.430705,146.102371&spn=0.535442,1.318359&t=h&z=11

I used to hang around Moorooduc quarry as a kid, swimming on summer days, climbing the walls and playing with sling shots.
There was a rumour the water was a mile deep at some point and that horse bodies lay on the bottom.
This film cropped up after not visiting there for a few years. The elaborate set and constructions in the movie had me intrigued and I ventured back only to find it was left untouched and pristine as I remember, as if nothing had ever happened there. A credit to the stage builders who cleaned up after themselves.

Thank you for the photos, this has been a real trip down memory lane. I also discovered this movie as kid, maybe 4 years old. Cody is like a young Macgyver in this, inspiration perhaps?
