Henry Thomas's performance

Like many of you I recently re-discovered this movie after having thoroughly enjoyed it as a child, which is always fun.

Watching it with more critical eyes now, it sure seems like Henry Thomas is sleep walking through this movie. Many of the scenes even sound dubbed. Thoughts?

Regretfully I agree: the child-acting career of the boy who stole the world's heart in ET ended here not with a bang but a whimper.

But I have faith that he could have done much better. More likely the director or someone up there decided that the character of Cody Walpole was so introverted and self-absorbed that he would mumble everything. Henry's basic charisma is in some ways at a white-hot peak. It's too bad that we can hardly hear what he says.

If the director asked him to play the part of a boy who just tragically lost both of his parents and had live with a foster parent in a foreign country....then I'd say he did alright. Cody Walpole is the man!
