What nobody told you about Duckie....;-)

is that he quite possibly grew up to be a hot guy with lots of talent by the time he reached 35 years old, and suddenly had women fighting over him!

What inspired this post is not an alternate ending for Pretty In Pink but a real-life friend who fits the above description...he is handsome and photogenic and blows people away with his musical talent. When I recently viewed his high school graduation photo, get this--he looked so much like Duckie it isn't funny!

I loved Andie with Blaine at the time...but wanted to say, don't discount the hidden gem that Duckie could've been! I might not have believed it myself if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes.

And what they also didn't tell you about Duckie (if he grew up to be so good-looking) is that he ended up with a huge ego, quite self-centered and overly concerned with appearances. (Yes I am experiencing this right now, and let me tell you, it's not fun.)

Nah, he ends up doing time for stalking.

reply

Ha, quite possible!

And then, just when you think you will be angry at him forever, "Duckie" does something small and sweet and it's all over again...until the next time.

Duckie may be better looking.

But rest assured, he is the guy with a huge chip on his shoulders about all the girls who didn't like him in H.S.

He currently stalks Mrs. Steff McKee (formerly Andie Walsh) over the internet.

reply

I could see that.

Maybe after Andi moves away to college he starts hanging out at the record store to kill time and starts playing guitar/piano and a music industry person comes in and discovers him.

I don't have a problem with Andie ending up with Blane, but I think a Duckie ending could have been better.

We KNOW that Duckie is exceptionally bright, that's why he and Andie were allowed to attend Snobatorium Academy from outside their own district. He's young, immature, but totally devoted to Andie.

We see him at the prom suddenly mature; he realizes that Andie loves Blane and any future with her is impossible. So he admits this to himself and in a completely unselfish act, let's her go.

None of this seems wrong. So if we can accept Duckie's maturation during the prom scene, maybe we can accept a wee bit more.

I think Duckie could have been written to have matured a bit more up to and leading into the prom. Perhaps a more reasonable haircut, a decent pair of shoes, and that same mature change. Andie notices these things and looks at Duckie a bit differently. Have Ducky say all the same things at the prom, have Andie go to Blane as she did the original ending, but realize that the now more mature and unselfish Duckie (who now wants to be called Derek or whatever his given name would be) is a better fit for her. She runs back to Duckie who's surprised at this and sees a different look in Andie's eyes as she looks at him. Fade to black.

It would be fun to see this alternate ending even if it didn't make the final cut.

I like your idea for an alternate ending!

The Deluxe version DVD I purchased some time back but haven't gotten around to viewing yet (yes, I'm odd...and only have a mini DVD player at home so I view most of them at my sister's--but still should've found the time to watch this by now) claims to have an alternate ending--could this be the Duckie one? I say this because in the original paperback book version of the movie, she ends up with Duckie, not Blane. I believe it was originally intended for Andie to end up with Duckie but test audiences wanted her with Blaine...so it would make perfect sense for an alternate ending to exist where Andie and Duckie became a couple.
