She said her butt is 15 years younger than Andie's which would have made her prom 1971. The dress she brings out of the mothballs is so 60's! And the beehive is like 1963. She also makes a comment about "all the drugs I did in the 60's", which would make her a druggy at 14 or 15! It's nit picky, but she should have been 20 years older, not 15!
shareGood call! It seemed weird that she'd be hanging out with a high school kid. A lot of it has to do with the fact they worked together, as so collogues tend to go out after hours. My wife and I (dating at the time) were the same age as Andie, etc, and they're was and "older" couple (who were all of 22) at the same department store we all worked at that would go to a lot of the same parties we were at. It was fun at first, but it seemed a little creepy after a while.
More recently, this valet at the same function hall I do side work at found out we had a lot in common (music, horror movies, etc). We'd grab lunch from time to time but even I (who can get along with anyone) felt like it was just strange.
She was a mother figure for Andie. Sometimes people of different ages are friends. I have friends much younger than me. It's like like they were "work colleagues" - Iona was someone Andie could talk to. It's not weird at all.

I'd say she is the right age in this film, probably around 34 or 35. That would make her 18 or 17 in 1969. She entered high school around 1965. If you check fashions for 64, there were some beehives still being worn although there was a transition into bobs. The fact that beehives were out of fashion by her graduation day would not have bothered Iona one bit.
We have to consider her wacky style changes throughout the whole film.
I'm going by the date of the film...1986. If Andie is graduating I'm assuming she's 17 or 18. And if Iona says her butt is "15 years older", that would make her 32 or 33 and her prom would have been in 1971. Iona's prom dress is not from 1971! Just sayin'...
shareI think they just messed up, that dress is so early 60s - I know there was a 50s fashion/culture revival of sorts in the 70s but I think it was few years after 1971 and the 60s beehive wouldn't really fit with that anyway
shareIona is eccentric so I could buy that she liked to dress in '60s fashion in 1971, but the drugs comment would still have to be explained that she did drugs as a very early teen. Which, hey, maybe she did. I think that was the line because Annie Potts is 15 years older than Molly Ringwald, but they should have considered if that age difference fit the timeline for these other details.
