What was Steph thinking?

That look on his face when Andi gets to school and he's leaning against his car.. and she sees him and stops. She looks at him like she hates his guts but I still wonder what he was thinking. He didn't give her a smug look. I will always think he was jealous and that's why he acted the way he did.

Its a good question, because at first, it really seems to be without malice, as if hes genuinely wondering whats wrong with her, since shes clearly upset. Then she sees him and gives him an ice old stare, at which point Steff reverts back to his former self and gives her a sort of smug, cocky look.

I think it shows that Steffs anger at her comes more from her anger at him, more than anything personal he has against Andie.

"When life presents you with lemons, squeeze out the juice and squirt it in your enemies eyes."

No the look you should really be analyzing is when he realizes his best friend has won the girl he has been in love with for over 4 years. We got heartbreak, rage and jealousy going on there.

The reason why the film is so memorable is due to Spader giving this minor role very real emotions and intentions. He is watching and waiting for Andie for the whole film, he purposely made sure that his character was analogous to Duckie. Did you notice?

Spader's Steff knows that Blaine is creeping toward Andie throughout the whole film. And in every scene he is purposefully turning him away from her. He is only really hateful at the end because he knows he is losing his last chance to win her.

Duckie saved Andie/ruined Steff's plans when he attacked him in the school hallway. Because Steff was hightailing it after a very heartbroken Andie in order to get her on the rebound.

I'll never understand why Hughes threw the gold away with Spader's performance neglecting to add scenes for his character. But I kind of suspect he was blind because his Duckie was quite plainly the Gary Stu of the story.

Spot on! Love this comment you wrote. I absolutely agree.
I especially loved what you wrote about Spader and him giving very real emotions to this minor role. Because to this day I'm blown away by the fact that Spader's Steff was only a supporting role but he is the character that left the most impression on me which I'd never ever forget. His role and acting in that film is always the first thing that comes to my mind when I think of "Pretty in Pink" (and no, it's not because he's hot or an *beep* but because compared to the rest, he gave raw and real emotions and gave a super strong performance). In reality this underpart/supporting role of Steff usually would not have as much importance for the film, but the way he played it, it turned into a very important role that was thriving the whole film and kept it alive, together and interesting. In this very film it's interesting how all the supporting roles are actually far more interesting than the two main characters.

He´s thinking....Why isn´t she into me??? I can have any girl but not her?? He really did love her.

I think he was trying to gauge whether his conversation in the library with Blane actually worked this time. He can't just ask Blane and Blane and Andie sneak around on all their dates so he doesn't know for sure. He wants to know if she and Blane are still together or his manipulation finally worked. So he looks at Andie and Andie gives him a look of rage and then he knows it worked.

In my opinion, I don't think it was actually love, more of a conquest. He could have anyone but her and you always want what you can't have. The scene at the car, he thought his plan of "if he couldn't have her, neither could Blane" worked. Needless to say it didn't.

reply

I agree, way more conquest than love. He would have used her and thrown her away and ruined her reputation as well. (To be clear I'm not condoning that, I just believe this HS would have made her into even more of an outcast.) although I graduated in 1992 our school was so like this one I almost wondered if Mr Hughes had visited.

The best sequence in the film is when Andie sees Steph at the cars then she confronts Blaine. After that Steph and Duckie exchange punches. So much emotion!
