Spader...

Always stood out in this, every time I've seen this. Such a much better actor than the rest.. (though McCarthy and Ringwald aren't exactly Tracy and Hepburn) Just too cool for the room, but, still...you like his prick character for some reason.

Even the small side story about how he professes to have liked Ringwald's character for years (and you're just not really sure if he's playing with her, or going about it all wrong with her..) is great writing.

When, on the bed during his party, he says to his girlfriend "You are worthless, aren't you?" when she gets Andy's name wrong, then..
Just caught this..same deal- at the prom- (almost under his breath) "I don't give a shiht what you do" . You know it's an ad-lib.

Just great!

"My advice to you...is to start drinking heavily".

Yeah Steff is pretty much my favourite part of this movie, he is the definitive 80s ' smug, über-rich dickhead ' - many 80s movies have this archetype but Steff set the gold standard for this type of character - I really can't imagine anyone else but Spader in the role

Steph was just beautiful. James Spader could do no wrong in this, or in Less Than Zero. Age can be such a cruel thing to men like him - it is a short list, but he is on it of men I want to stay the same as they were when I had movie crushes on them.
