Experiencing 'Playing for Keeps'

Hey, Im watching this movie on HBO right now. Im addicted to '80s Teen Movies, but havent seen this one until now. So far it's pretty terrible. Frankly, I may not even finish watching it. For sollipsism's sake, Im going to record my thoughts in progress, though (in roughly chronological order):

-The beginning decent, cool unheard-before song by Pete Townshend

-The font of the credits seems to be a rip-off of that wrestling movie with Modine (which is a worse omen than the 4 Horsemen appearing)

-The grey graduation gowns blow

-Christopoher Columbus? Id rather be shot than take part in that fictional game

-I think the guy playing Silk may be gay

-The guy playing Spikes looks like the Sklar Brothers

-The soundtrack is actually pretty good

-Why was Silk's annoying dance dream sequence so much longer than the cooler/hotter one with Spikes as the teacher of an erotic aerobics class?

-The boy scout scene was actually fairly funny

-Marissa Tomei is hot with pink lipstick

-Random Thought: Why is this film 103 minutes??

-The part where they meet Rockefeller is the first time this feels '80s-esque

-Haha! "Pornography...and you know where that leads!" What the hell comes after porn?

-If Rockefeller's past ("Son, dont ask more than you need to know...") isnt illuminated more, I'll be angry

-As annoying as Danny is, his message about only taking small-time jobs back in NY as being a worse alternative to committing to the hotel is a legit one

-Random Thought: How could anyone claim to have watched this movie thoudsands of times and have the will to live?

-This country girl is well casted and cute

-Cromwell's a surprisingly multi-faceted character

-What was Danny babbling about when the country girl was naked? Come on

-The country girl moving in=Awesome '80s-ness

-Ah, Rockefeller's past revealed....somewhat

-Threat of STDs? That's always a source of humor....Psyche!

-The girlfriend of the guy threatened with herpes (Steinberg?) et al is super hot

-Why would Steinberg be excited about testing old mattresses? If Im not mistaken, a) you can have intercouse in places other than beds and b) the bed is not the best part of intercourse

-The farmer just now realized his daughter living in a dillapidated hotel with crazed teens was questionable?

-'80s Computer use rocks

-Ah, Christopher Columbus *did* have a purpose...kinda?

-The effect of showing the guys hidden in the shelves by the headlights of a passing car when they broke into that restaurant was pretty cool

-Why would the obese lady tell everyone about the insane deals at the grocery store? She could buy like a ton of stuff for little money before everyone found out. Nice move, Einstein

-The severe beating the backhoe driver receives seems unneccessary

-Oh, NM, she gave him $20....

-Ok, in case the scene where Cromwell's plot is revealed to the kidnapped yet compliment townsfolk could be any less realistic, the inspector shows up? Worst scene of the '80s? Besides all of that wrestling movie

-No, please no...not another Silk dance scene...

-Oh, whew...it's only a Silk singing scene....if this isnt on the National Film Registry soon, we should all be ashamed

-What's up with '80s Sklar's closing voiceover? It starts off all cool and '80s Optimistic and relatable to all walks of life then turns into a really specific statement about how to make a hotel?? "In life, dont forget about your dreams. Especially if your dream is to kidnap adults, find a sane homeless guy who gives indespensible advice and open a hotel which you'll call 'Hotel Majestic.'"

Well, this movie was about what I expected. Glad to have seen it since I want to see as many '80s Teen Movies as possible, but cant say I disagree with the low rating here at IMDB. Not the worst of the '80s, but not stomachable...hardly.

Thanks to anyone who read all this!

I watched this movie when i must have been 12 and remember loving it. I read your review but I could hardly remember anything of the story. I must be growing old. :(

Yep. This commentary pretty much covers everything. ROFL.

REALLY cheesy movie, but I still like it for nostalgia's sake. So much 80s ridiculosity.
