This confuses lots of people when films are also released in the 4x3 (Academy) aspect ratio.
PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED was shown theatrically in the 1.85:1 widescreen aspect ratio. Though the negative is still in the 4x3 aspect ratio, a mask is used to create the 1.85:1 widescreen image, which is what the filmmakers intended. This same mask is used over the camera lens during filming though the film stock is still capturing lots of information above and below the frame which isn't intended to be seen in the final print of the film.
Unfortunately, when films were first being released on home video (including early DVDs), many contained unmasked 4x3 versions for the fullscreen TV screens thus people were seeing all this extra framing the filmmakers were not intending to show. The (1:85.1) widescreen format is what the filmmakers were intending on showing so even though it appears to be cropped it actually is the correct composition.
