Cassandra homage?

In Wayne's World, the female lead is Cassandra (as we all know). I have yet to find any information, but since in both movies the female lead shares the same name and role (female singer in rock band) I have been wondering if this is more than just coincidence.

Since this movie came out seven years before "Wayne's World", I'd say it's the other way around. That Cassandra from WW is an homage to OCS.
