Tom Hanks Really has NOTHING in common!

At the start of the movie Tom Hanks walks through a dozen cubicals greeting him with shallow one liners like, "How's the wife?!" "Good!" and then someone else appears for a new exchange. I don't see how every person on Earth is his friend when he greets all of them with such shallow lines. Its like they have NOTHING IN COMMON!
