JACKIE GLEASON SHOULD HAVE WON AN OSCAR FOR HIS PERFORMANCE IN THIS FILM

I'M SORRY,BUT I KNOW IT WAS JACKIE GLEASON'S FINAL PEFORMANCE THAT HE EVER DID,BUT I REALLY THOUGHT HE NOT ONLY DESERVED A NOMINATION OSCAR FOR BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR IN THIS MOVIE,BUT I REALLY FEEL HE WOULD HAVE WON IT AS WELL.THIS IS ANOTHER LOW POINT IN THE ACADEMY'S FAILURE TO RECOGNIZE ANOTHER GREAT PERFORMANCE.I MEAN NOW THAT I THINK OF SOME OF THE GREAT ROLES FROM PAST FILMS THAT THEY IGNORED SUCH AS THE ICE STORM,JACKNIFE(THIS MOVIE HAD EXCELLENT PERFORMANCES FROM ALL 3 LEAD ACTORS),MIRACLE,THE WAR AT HOME,COP LAND,CARLITO'S WAY,PHENONMENON,DONNIE BRASCO,GET SHORTY,WONDERLAND,LEAN ON ME,THE PATRIOT,THE DOORS,TOMBSTONE,PUNCHLINE,THE NATURAL(ONLY GLENN CLOSE WAS NOTICED BY THE ACADEMY,AND NOT ROBERT REDFORD,SAD,VERY SAD),STAND BY ME,EIGHT MEN OUT,NICK OF TIME,AT CLOSE RANGE,COLORS,SLING BLADE,JONH Q,THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT,AND THERE IS SO MANY MORE.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion but I found Gleason's performance in this film abrasive and over the top. I think Hanks deserved a nomination much more than Gleason did. Hanks was superb in this film.

BOTH WERE GOOD,BUT AT THE TIME THEY WERE NOT READY TO TAKE TOM SERIOUS AS AN ACTOR.JACKIE SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN ONE.REMEMBER IT'S A BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR NOMINATION,NOT BEST ACTOR.

You are not the only one. At the time, many movie reporters said the same thing. On TV shows, they ran the scene where he tried to reconcile with his ex-wife, played by Eva Marie Saint but his character could not help but be abrasive, undermining the reconciliation. Jackie Gleason WAS abrasive.

I thought Gleason was pretty good here. Yes, he was abrasive, because it fit his character. Max Basner was a bitter man who was lonely, lacked status since retiring, wanted more attention from his son, feared for his health, and felt guilty over his divorce. I'd rather be his son (Hanks) sleeping with those sexy babes, but I found old-abrasive Max more watchable.

For a superb Gleason performance, see him as Minnesota Fats in The Hustler.

I have seen The Hustler and agree that his performance was good.

I would have to agree. Gleason should had got a Oscar. He was really good in this movie and very believeable.

I would think of any of Gleason's film roles the one that he probably should have gotten an Oscar nomination for was Smokey and the Bandit. I thought he was a brilliant comic foil as the Sheriff. It's a shame he didn't become a bigger star in feature film.

reply

Yes, I agree. This was a complete oversight on the Academy's part. The only oversight I can think of that was worse was Robrt Shaw not being nominated for his Quint character in "Jaws."

reply

I loved his performance in this film. Although I wish he has been nominated I won't go as far as to say he should have won an Oscar without knowing what other acters/ roles had been up for the award.

Michael Caine won Best Supporting Actor (the category I assume Gleason competed in) that year for "Hannah And Her Sisters". The other nominees were Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe for "Platoon", Dennis Hopper for "Hoosiers" and Denholm Elliott for "Room With A View." In hindsight, since Caine won again years later for "Cider House Rules", maybe this should have been Hopper's Oscar. In any event, I would have substituted Gleason for Elliott (great actor, but I just didn't care for RWAV). If he competed in the Best Actor category, the winner was Paul Newman for "Color Of Money", and the other nominees were Bob Hoskins for "Mona Lisa", James Woods for "Salvador", William Hurt in "Children Of A Lesser God", and Dexter Gordon in "Round Midnight".

I know this is an old thread but I came on to post the same thing. He SHOULD have gotten an Oscar for this performance.
