This movie is good but shows it's age....

This is a good movie; I watched it strictly because Jackie Gleason was in it. But watching now; I don't like it as much. I thought Tom Hanks character is an ass. He just came back from vacation with his girlfriend and now he's sleeping with Sela Ward too? Not too safe with AIDS and all going on.

the planet is fine; the people are f@cked!!

The girl on the plane wasn't his girlfriend, she was a flight attendant he hooked up with.

"She's, like, a biscuit older than me..."

reply

Yup. The movie is about the 80's when it was produced.
WHAT part of the 50's are YOU in?

In '85, when this was filmed, AIDS was still considered a gay and intravenous drug user disease. Other than nobody having cell phones and the lack of computers this movie holds up quite well, as the the theme of the movie is ageless.

This will be the high point of my day; it's all downhill from here.

jejozi lack of computers? there was loads in the year 85+ before from Computers/consoles like Atari, Apple 2, Spectrum,Master System,Nintendo[nes], Amiga 1000, BBC micro, Amstrad,etc-the first cell phone was in 1985 my dad and his friend had one

How many had compters and cell phones? I graduated HS in '76, so I know what was going on in '85. Your dads cell phone in '85 was most likely a 1'x1' box or a large walkie talkie and he spent the equvilant of $3000 in today's dollars for a computer that had far less power than what we carry in our pockets today. It also sounds as if you came from a rather privileged family and weren't aware how the other 90% lived.

yep that mobile was the brick with the ariel lol, he was a stockbroker at the time but by 87 they had gone down a hell of a'lot. And bout computers one of my friends in primary school wasn't as rich as me and he had a computer the Atari ST + Amstrad which was 99 pounds in UK at the time prob be like 300 pounds now so would of been just under 200 dollars in US so did not cost 3000 dollars in today's money but I'm in UK and that computer[Atari] cost bout 150 pounds was quite reasonable,
and so was the Master system+Nintendo[NES] that were both out in 85 in US and people had them in every state sold tons -the computers that were expensive were ones like the Amiga 1000 which did cost a thousand pounds or Apple 11!
so there was computers that were affordable Erik-home computers that also played games were expensive not consoles like I said above

Man you're a douche

Personal computers have existed since 1975. But by 1985, they were still pretty rare. Only about 10% of the population had one in their home.
