Maybe I'm overanalyzing this, but anyone else think maybe John was married? The duck at the boat house (he said it was a friend's place but it could have been a lie). Then when she dresses as a man he's talking about going home to his wife and kids but had this girl on the side.

No - I never got the impression he was married. Plus he really didn't seem like the marrying type, did he?
