why did she break up

Did she just reach a breaking point and had enough; or was there something specific? I can not tell.

The turning point in my opinion was when he initiated that threesome with the foreign hooker in the Chelsea Hotel room. He was all over her, right in front of Elizabeth and that was probably the absolute final straw for her. She had fallen so in love with him at that point, yet here he was still playing these destructive games. Between that moment, and the scene where she wakes up in his apartment near the end, she probably realised that it had gone far enough and that she could no longer drain herself by being with him.

I guess thats why the. Movie is called nine and a half weeks. A relationship so intense and extreme could never last. Would there be a place for convensional love after the obsession, the games, the tension and pushing of boundries?

reply

she was thinking about it before the threesome thing. there was no future. she left him to save herself.

reply

Enough was enough. She had to leave for her sanity. The game with the threesome must have finally pushed her over the edge.

John had pushed to far, this time.

I think the scene where he told her he couldn't get excited unless she got down on all fours and picked up the money was the point at which she probably realised he actually was a real whack-job, even before the forced threesome.

It was the straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak.

reply

Not really sure, but remember the scene in her office where she is talking with her friend - she is pondering why you end some relationships and you know she hasn't really figured John out - and she says sometimes it might be the books he reads. I guess it depends on the viewer.

reply

Oh I think youre absolutly right. Tgat talk she has with co-worker frirnd was cool. That conversation about some seemingly inconsequential and arbitrary thing that clues us all in on when its over with someone was interesting. I thing it explain why she ended it with john. She just knew when and specificly it was over, whether we did or not.

reply

I think Elizabeth broke up with John because, although at first the sex games were fascinating and mysterious and romantic, they became more and more degrading, and they violated her dignity. She realized that the experimental sex wasn't what she really wanted. She wanted a more conventional relationship with a monogamous man who would love and respect her. John wasn't that man.

There's no way John could have had a normal relationship with her if they talked it over?

Think about the last scene, in John's apartment. He couldn't even express himself by saying "I love you" to her face, he said it after she had gone, as he crumbled and burst into tears. It was all about control for John, and he finally realised this, so it upset him. He couldn't love without being the dominant one. It was too late, however, as Elizabeth had long since left his apartment, leaving what they had behind.

Just saw this movie. As I recall it, John had told Elizabeth he loved her in the hotel room before the threesome.

And I have to say, how ever irrelevant it may be, Mickey Rourke was quite the handsome fox back in the day!! Have to wonder what the hell happened to him!

In the book, it's much more understandable why she left. She was being physically abused and he didn't seem to love her. The movie, however, is a bit baffling. Sure, he was into kinky and adventurous stuff, but very little of it struck me as humiliating to the point that she would feel compelled to leave. Even with the hooker thing and messing around in front of her, it wasn't like he brought in someone who was true competition for her. He was clearly doing it for THEIR sex life, not because he was in love with a hooker or even liked a hooker. Also, it's baffling why she would leave him because he didn't do too terribly much wrong except not be down to hang with her friends, which seemed like something she could continue to work on with him. He didn't put them down; he just acted shy and more loner-like. Also, he wanted her to crawl on the floor and grab some money. Big deal! it's playing. Anyway, that's all just me. Oh yeah, and they barely communicated.

In the book she has a nervous breakdown and he deposits her at a mental hospital and leaves her.

I think it was something that happened at the old man's gallery showing, I think they were showed together, or him looking at her, then next scene she is throwing up in the sink .. then she broke up with the mickey rourke. I thought she felt sexual tension for the old man and it made her sick ... seems so random though

She realized the relationship was all based around kink and games, when she leaves him he finally starts telling her about his upbringing and family and she tells him it's too late.

Basically the relationship is like a cartoon and she realizes that he will just keep upping the ante.

Really poor choice of hooker too.

John was freaky, you know?
