I think the detective could have saved himself if they would have just used the flamethrower on the pile of slugs instead of blowing up the house
old MACs look cool but are pretty much useless these days
The flame thrower was out of gas by the time they got to the basement.
Also, the detective led a miserable life after the death of his ex and wanted to go out in a blaze of glory.

shareI don't think he even cared about the glory, he was trying to kill himself with the gas from his stove earlier in the film. It was in his mind his chance at redemption in his mind for not saving his ex back in 1959.
