Great Commentary Track

The director's commentary track on the DVD is outstanding and answers many of the questions I see posted here. He talks extensively about the sets and locations, production design and the lack of security/safety. They apparently were lucky they did not have multiple accidents and fatalaties especially during the final tower burning scenes. One actor did die of natural causes right after filming.

The movie is not one of my favorites but the commentary track is, so fans should definitely check it out.

Yeah, it's great listening to what Annaud has to say. It's a shame his later career was a little lackluster, considering all the fine work he did here and the amazing stories he has to tell about it. We're lucky this movie's DVD has such a rich Special Features section.

That's how it looks like when someone who actually gives a you-know-what makes a movie.

I was very amused at his description of how the filming of the sex scene played out.

But yeah it's a great commentary track, it made fascinating listening. I was very impressed with the director's attention to detail in all aspects of the movie. His hard work shows; this is an incredibly authentic portrayal of the Middle Ages (within reason; of course we can't make it exactly as it was then, but we can do our best).
