Slater asked Mom for the girl

The famous sex scene has always been a topic with this movie. Here are a few supposed facts.

1.) They really did have actual intercourse.
2.) Slater was 15 The girl was 22.
3.) Three different women were to try out for the part.
4.) Slater choose the one in the movie without seeing the other two at all.
5.) Slater supposedly called his mother a casting producer telling her how much he liked the chosen girl.
6.) Slater's mother spoke with the director and arranged for the The girl to be the one her son wanted.

Here's the kicker. Basically a 15 year old boy is getting his mothers help for his first experience. That just seems weird. They both had to know ahead of time what was going to be expected.

He thinks movie sex scenes are real.

By all the accounts I've heard or read, this one was, and the OP's summary of the facts is essentially accurate.

I don't know about this particular sex scene, but some sex scenes in some movies are indeed real.

reply

On the commentary track for the DVD, the director said the sex was real. In fact, he said that Adso and The Girl kept going at it for minutes after the director yelled, "Cut!".

I did not get that impression form the commentary. I heard that the boy was not told what was going to happen when they started filming the scene. And I doubt that that could be true as well as it not being simulated, that would just be a little rapey.

SCOOP'S SIDEBAR bulleted item 3 contradicts your "facts" and also implies the sex act was just that--an act.

My conclusion is you pulled some facts from the Trivia section and made up the sex stuff.

If you have a counter source provide it.

SCOOP'S SIDEBAR bulleted item 3 contradicts your "facts" and also implies the sex act was just that--an act.

The third bulleted item on the page to which you linked:

In a spirited and realistic sex scene, Valentina Vargas provides one of the more explicit gyno/procto shots ever committed to mainstream celluloid. Annaud points out in a DVD featurette that he never told Christian Slater what was coming in this scene. Slater knew that there was a love scene in the script, of course, but did not know that the director told Valentina Vargas to surprise Slater by making the scene as real as possible, and to be as aggressive as she could. Slater's natural reaction was captured on camera, and was perfect for the character, who was a naive and virginal novice monk being overpowered by a lusty, experienced peasant girl. I don't know if Vargas actually packed . . . the Slater Sausage at any time, but if not, she came damned close. Slater's penis also makes a few appearances on camera.
I don't see the contradiction here. There's no implication that the sex was an act; there's a statement that the writer doesn't know together with an acknowledgement that at worst it "came damned close." And if Vargas succeeded in "making the scene as real as possible," that would of course mean that she had made it completely real.

As for sources . . . well, the only one of the OP's six points that you're disputing is the first one, and the OP does acknowledge that it's a "supposed" fact. At any rate, I don't have a source at hand either (beyond Annaud's commentary), but I've always heard and read that the sex scene was realistic at least to the point of near-intercourse, and your own source confirms as much.

There's no such thing as a 'supposed' fact. Something is either a fact, or it's not.

It's like when people say something is 'almost unique'.

Good for Slater, if it is true. If not, it makes a good urban legend. We'll always have debates on whether James Morrison's girlfriend made love to his corpse, which songs were part of the Lennon-McCartney feud, which two rock stars participated in the "gross out" contest of the spoon and the defecation.

But this reminds me of when I was 15, and I was sexually abused by the most gorgeous girl I ever saw. Despite all I tried to do, despite my naive hopes, she never once seduced me. That was true sexual abuse.

How do we know it's not a fake? It looks like a fake to me.

No, in fact. I've just watched the film on Blu-ray, and there are a couple of scenes where you can't really miss that Slater's dick gets a film debut all its own. And it's ... not hard.

Not surprisingly, I think. Yes, Vargas is hot, but I have friends who are film actors and actresses who've done full-naked sex scenes on camera (no, not porn), and they say there's nothing less arousing than trying to film a sex scene with a full film crew standing around you.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

reply

This is just a rumor started by Jean Jacques Annaud. He did the same for The Lover in 1992, but. the young actress in that film raised some stink that it was not true. Still, he seems to prefer creating these rumors as a way of promoting his films. Clearly effective, but very low in my opinion.

reply

They did not have a full crew, as Annaud stated in his commentary. They set up a skeleton crew, with most of the cameras fixed, as is often done during nude sex scenes in mainstream films. You are right that Slater was not erect at the first coupling, but he seemed to be in a few overhead shots. As for The Lover, you can clearly see penetration at one point (unrated cut), so your comments are wrong, and actress Jane March was either lying or Annaud used a body double.

reply

I'm surprised that you are missing one very important thing. THERE ARE STRICT LAWS THAT FORBID SEXUAL INTERCOURSE BETWEEN A MINOR AND AN ADULT. In this case the underage man Slater and the adult woman Vargas.

Regardless of what kind of film this is, intercourse cannot happen. I would assume that besides Slater's mother present on set, there would be child services supervising the scene as is the case with any film that has underage nudity. I can imaging mother Slater's facial expressions at seeing her son's erect pecker.

Think back to 1978's Pretty Baby where a 12-year-old Brooke Shields created an uproar when she was cast as a child prostitute.
Child services monitors these scenes.

One last thought, how is filming a sex scene with a full crew less arousing? How do porn stars keep a hard-on with everyone watching?

Filming in a foreign country, USA laws do not apply. Plus, people break laws or may not know them. Maybe Christian's mom was not present like the mother of that girl Roman Polanski drugged and raped. I'm not talking about porn but don't see the relevance. Porn actors are rare and most men don't get erections on nude beaches from what I have read. On set porn movies use fluffers or the men just masturbate maybe. What is your point?

reply

Maybe they used a body double, but you can see his erection in an overhead shot I think and you can see penetration in The Lover (unrated version), so somebody is lying. I don't know how old Jane March was, but plenty of girls & boys break the laws against under-age sex, regardless.

reply

I made my point: sex between a minor and an adult is illegal in all developed nations. They still have to follow the rules.

Yes, a body double could have been used also, though none was reported here.

"sex between a minor and an adult is illegal in all developed nations"

Not necessarily. Firstly, the definition of a minor - i.e. the age of consent - differs. For some more repressed parts of the USA, the age of consent is 18. In a lot of countries, it is 16. In many others it is 15. Some allow sex at 14. And secondly, in some countries, whilst sex between a 25-year-old and a 13-year-old would be illegal, between a 15-year-old and a 13-year-old it wouldn't, due to the small age difference.

reply

"sex between a minor and an adult is illegal in all developed nations"
Not necessarily.

Okay then, let's at least go with "if this was underage sex, the film would at least not have been shown in certain nations, such as the US".

That's why they are porn stars.

As Sid James once said of a nude scene Barbara Windsor did in a "Carry On" film, it is incredible just how many people make up a skeleton crew.
