Pigs slaughter scene: real or fake?

As title says, I need to know if the pigs slaughter scene was simulated, or the animals were actually killed. Didn't pay much attention to the details of that revolting scene, and went back to my zapping. I didn't find this movie in the lists of films involving real animal abuse, so I'm hoping it was fake.

It was probably real, and why not? Pigs get slaughtered every day to make yummy bacon.

Because killing an animal for food and for the mere sake of a film is the exact same thing. Indeed.
Of course, can't expect any brains or taste from some fat, bacon-loving guy with that kind of avatar. Go back to your cave and choke on some Mammuth steak.

I thought normal trolls were bad but it seems PETA trolls are even worse! 

Pigs would likely be extinct by now if they weren't tasty enough for us to raise and proliferate the species.

Not eating meat is slowly killing you, you'll die earlier than us healthy meat lovers.

All those grains you eat were grown on land stolen from a natural ecosystem, and fertilized with dead animals.

Also, bacon is yummy.

And what if they donated the pig's bacon to the poor and hungry?

Get off your white horse, the world is larger and more complicated than you presume. People like you are why we can't feed the world's hungry. You care more for pigs than humans.

Maybe they filmed pigs that were processed and eaten?

This question has been asked on this board several times in the past decade, in threads that were eventually deleted. I don't think anybody really knows. We'd have to ask Jean-Jacques Annaud -- who, unfortunately, does not provide us with an answer on the DVD commentary.

Every single non-bone part of animals is edible, precious calories, fantastic source of protein:

It's actually not that bad, but I much prefer sausage made out of the fleshy parts of the dearly departed animals :-)
