Poorly structured or something

I really wanted to love this, but something isn't right. The first half hour is totally chilling, like stepping into real dark ages. Then it gets convoluted and film doesn't handle it very well. Pacing is all over the place. I also think Abraham F. Murray Abraham was pretty bad as inquisitor, he didn't look scary at all, acted like pompous idiot.

That's interesting, I understand what you mean, but maybe it's because it feels a bit rushed?

The scene in the labyrinth is too short and there's supposed to be more of it too, the book really goes into it.

I disagree about Bernardo Gui though, I thought Abraham's portrayal was brilliant. Yes, pompous, I think that's accurate though. Self-righteous, opportunistic, ambitious, cruel, false humility and kindness, just brilliant. Like when he so sweetly tells Salvatore that the torture will cause him as much pain as it will Salvatore. That's brilliant. And then "You dare raise your hand against The Church?!"

His impalement is so cathartic.

It gets hard to follow after awhile, I'm sure a book like that is hard to adapt into a 2 hour movie.
