I am with you on this one, how is it possible in an animation to get this so wrong. I always noticed this even as a kid. It is kind-of sad that it bothered me that much, but it's nice to know I'm not alone!

That's what my dad and I call "something you're not suppose to think about". I've never noticed that myself, but it wouldn't surprise me. After all, if you watch the Transformers, G.I.Joe, or any other 80's cartoon you'll notice several such mistakes, such as one character speaking with a different character's voice, or a character throwing their key prop (such as He-Man's sword) away, and suddenly having it on them in the next shot. I think such mistakes crop up when animators get in a hurry to finish the scene so they can move on to the next one.

Bah weep granah weep nini bong!
Name the movie!

I watched this movie last night for the first time in a LONG time but I actually noticed at one point when they were about to climb up that cliff face, Shady (that's the pink one with yellow hair right?) and the blue unicorn are replaced by the white unicorn with green hair and some purple pony for just a split second! Then it's back to the two that are supposed to be there! Yet another mistake, lol. How does a cartoonist make a mistake like that? And how much does that say about how interchangeable the ponies are?

From what I've read, many such mistakes crop up because of things like: (not enough time), (animated one way, but different actor's voice recorded), (incorrectly painted cell), etc. The funniest animation mistake I've heard of (one which you wouldn't see at all in the episode of Transformers it was in) was a scene in which a decepticon (the bad guys for those of you not familiar with Transformers) is flying through a city. The animators inadvertantly animated the scene backwards, so that the bad guy flies through the city in reverse. As I said, you wouldn't see it in the episode, because the editors actually caught it and simply ran the shot backwards so that the animation would run forward. As I said in my previous post in this thread, there are numerous funny and sometimes very humerous mistakes that crop up in animated productions, and often these get past the editors simply because they don't notice, and/or don't have time to reanimate the scene.

It's like all those Indiana Jones Movies, where Indy looses his signature fedora, and somehow, miraculously gets it back in the next scene. (ignoring the behind the scenes video where Harrison Ford takes an empty staple gun and acts like he is stapling his fedora on his head).

If I may broaden this a bit, you can probably look at just about any movie and find a mistake or inconsistency or something that doesn't actually make sense when you really think about it. Like in the scene we've all seen in umpteen billion TV shows and movies, where a man and woman are in bed together (having already done naughty things together or are just about to do naughty things together) and they are without clothes. They are lying there, and the sheets are down around the man's waist, but they are up to the woman's armpits, so that nothing "naughty" is actually seen on camera. Or in a number of cartoons (namely adventure cartoons; He-Man was notorious for this) where the hero or villain always has just the right gadget he/she/it needs to do what he/she/it needs to do, and the prop in question is conveniently located on the back of their belt, and all they need to do is reach around behind themselves.

Basically all this stuff boils down to what my father always called "stuff you're not supposed to think about when watching movies."

Wiseman say, "if you can't fit a square peg into a round hole...use a bigger hammer."

Found some more... the white pony with the pink hair is often seen twice in the same scene, and in a scene when the smooze is coming toward the castle, and theyre all putting down sandbags, Lickety Split is there helping, when shes supposed to be trapped under the waterfall. :D

Wow, old post, and hasn't been touched in awhile. In any case. Most of these so called continuity errors can be easily explained. Many of the G1 Little Ponies had babies. Gusty, Shady, Lickety-Split, North Star, Sundance (the White Pony with Pink Hair), Ribbon, Lofty, and some others all had babies.

There is indeed a scene during the intro song where it appears that two copies of Sundance are shown in the same scene, but one is Baby Sundance. The baby versions look nearly identical except they are smaller. Unless they are standing right next to each other (which almost never happens in this film) it would be very hard to tell them apart.

The scenes that show Shady when she's not supposed to be there, could very well be Baby Shady. Same with Gusty. Sometimes later in the film you see what looks like Gusty, but without any Smooze on her. That is probably Baby Gusty (also seen as one of the Baby Pony dancers in the beginning). Also, Gingerbread looks a great deal like Gusty from a distance, and was in the film.

The only real problem I see is during the 'Nothing Can Stop the Smooze' song, you see what appears to be Baby Lickety-Split helping to fortify Dream Castle. The problem is that in the show, Lickety-Split had 6 ice cream cones for her cutie mark. Baby Lickety-Split had 3. The pony shown in that scene clearly had three, and therefore was indeed Baby Lickety-Split. It is still not a certainty that it is an error in 'continuity', perhaps the pony in that scene was intended to be Lickety-Split, and the animators drew the wrong cutie mark. Who knows.

Aside from that, there aren't many others that can't be explained by the Baby Ponies. Some though. When Wind Whistler and North Star are bringing Megan back, they are shown flying in, and it is clearly Wind Whistler and what looked like a flying version of Magic Star, instead of North Star. There are others, and are a bit of an annoyance at first.

All that aside, I really wish they had taken their damn time with this movie. I like it just fine, but some issues could have been easily resolved had it not been rushed through animation so quickly.

On a sadder note, I just read that Alice Playten (the voice of Baby Lickety-Split) died a couple years ago. Loved her performance on Frasier. She had a great voice for this kind of work. The voice acting in general was quite good in this movie. Clorus Leachman steals the show. Excellent as Hydia. Rhea Perlman and Madeline Kahn are a constant crackup! Also really like Russi Taylor (Martin Prince on the Simpsons) as Morning Glory. The scene where she echoes Baby Lickety-Split's song from the bottom of the well is entirely too cute.

I heard they only had 3 months to work on this movie and that's why there were mistakes, but interesting theory...

And RIP Alice Playten 
