Like because enjoyable story without some forceful social message.

I'm not the type to enjoy watching films more than once, but whenever this comes on it's like seeing an old friend. Maybe because the time and situation is realistic and not some forceful social message of how things should be. Even though the lead characters were gay, I wouldn't call it a gay film. They just happened to be gay, and the story was enjoyable without a forceful brainwashing message as so many Hollywood films seem to be to me.

The two characters being gay was only one theme among many in the film: Thatcherism, immigrants vs native-born English who resent working for immigrants funded by Thatcherism and probably illicit operations, belonging to one group or another, a young Palistani woman leaving her father's house and arranged marriage that would have been hell on her.
