This film shocked the hell out of me!

I was young around 13/14 at the time when I first watched this film and I had no idea what it was about. First time I had ever seen anything that was homosexual and having no idea the film had a gay romance in it and god I was so immature back then. Sadly old these days but thankfully more mature and a lot more excepting. I am just wondering if the film caught anyone else out.
