Horrible Movie

I saw this movie a few years ago and to this day I still hate it. This is without a doubt one of the worst movies I have ever seen. A word to the wise if you have yet to see it pass it up trust me on this.

I agree with WhyNow.

Eli Lapp: You never had your hands on a teat before.
John Book: Not one this big.

reply

Yes it is and I do agree! It's a GREAT movie and absolutely unique. Not the usual Hollywood *beep* and not that predictable. The book by Paul Theroux is one of my favorite and (he is so often wrong but) I can relate to Allie that he has a big problem with missionaries!!!

reply

I agree. I thought it was heavy handed and rather boring. I usually like Harrison Ford and I really thought it was his worst movie.

reply

Just because he's generally unlikeable doesn't mean the movie is no good. It's a wonderful portrait of a special type of madness.

I wish Harrison still had the cojones to take on such interesting characters.

I thought it was pretty good movie...better than a lot of other movies now-a-days.

"Just because he's generally unlikeable .."

You really think that? He went off the rails on the beach and after that, and was very unlikeable then, sure, but before that I think he was a great guy. And before they started living on the beach, that's most of the movie.

reply

? He was an imperialistic and racist ahole the ENTIRE MOVIE.

skip the movie, read the novel. it'll be good for you.

I love this movie, it's amazing how many meanings and feelings in it! and I very much like the relation between River and Harrison Ford. River himself said this movie was very important to him as an actor. You can see that, even when he does not have a line, he would still be very present in the action, his eyes very witty.
"Mosquito Coast" is a really good movie and I believe I understood it better the second time I saw it.

reply

I enjoyed this movie, but it was not one of my favorites. I have to agree, though, that I also think I understood it better the second time I saw it. It was better then.

I agree with alex as well. A film so rich with meaning, stunning visuals (just the shot of the huge menacing ice machine in the middle of the jungle is an incredibly unique image) and inspired performances is rare. Its a film that has stayed at the top of my favorites list since I first saw it when I was 7. It has so many memorable lines too like "I think about you when I go to the bathroom" and "Ice is civilization!".

reply

sorry, the first poster was correct-this is one helluva misfire and a nearly unwatchable film-By far Weir's worst-The novel was so rich and the Fox character was so interesting that I was really surprised the film missed the mark so completely-Especially after Weir and Ford worked so well in Witness-The worst thing about it was that Ford didn't try to stretch again as an actor up until this point-

reply

I haven't read that novel, but I really liked the movie. If it wasn't based on a book, would you all be saying the same thing?

I thought it was a pretty damn good film, and I am gonna buy the novel and read that after I liked it so much.

Great movie. Never boring.

There's a reason Ford has said out of his movies this is his favorite.

Watch it if you haven't seen it.

reply

I think both, the movie and the book are absolutely great! Love the story since many years and think Harrison Ford did a VERY good job.

reply

I remember not liking this as a kid. I found it boring and mundane. And I like Rocky 5 by the way.

reply

This is a great movie.
I, too think I got the meaning of it better the second or third time.
My brother hates this movie though. Only because Allie was insane and died at the end. Other than that he likes it. LOL.
So basically if it had no plot line, he'd love this movie. =]

reply

Moonflower, you should have include a SPOILER ALERT in your message where you stated that Allie dies at the end of the movie. I was planning on watching it this weekend, and I now know how it ends:(

reply

thanks for the SPOLIER ALERT, twat!

One of the worse movies you have "ever" seen? ..."lol" COME ON!!!....I can't stop laughing at your comment. Have you seen Halloween 3 through 8? Rocky 5? Jaws 3 and 4? Friday the 13th 5 through 10?...lol.....Generally when you speak to people about the "worst" movies they have ever seen, The Mosquito Coast, does not make the list!.."lol" oh lordy, now that was funny..

reply

Halloweeen 3 is classic.

So what if Michael Myers wasn't in it. I do think the title is misleading though.

4,5,6 -- ya they're crap

3 tried something different -- and it gets flack for it all the time.

Good Carpenter score, Tom Atkins was the man in it.

Same with 'Rocky 5' -- though i think less people will be with me on this one.

So what Rocky didn't go in the ring, the music was bad late 80's Hammer rap. Mickey's presence in the film makes up for it. The story went in an interesting direction -- and if Rocky 5 didn't exisit -- Rocky Balboa wouldn't have worked nearly as good as it did.

Enough at all that though.

Jaws 3 and 4... Friday (especially) 5 are dog sh!t.

This film is NOT in the same league as the above. There's plenty of 'one of the worse movies i've ever seen' threads on this site (only natural of course -- to each their own) but those threads SHOULD belong to these terrible remakes emerging and the more "unoringinal" pictures we seem to be plagued with now more than ever.

The Ford character is SUPPOSED to be detestable.

He is not Indiana Jones here people, he's a selfish miserable idealist that has moments of brilliance and monstrosity.

To me, the movies impact comes after the credits, when you are left to worry about and hope for Charlie. He has a real shot at redemption with the death of his father and to heal the family.

If your watching this for Ford, you're missing the whole point of the movie.

reply

yeah so far I have to agree with you.. not much has happened yet.. I am watching it right now. I hope it gets better.

reply

To all those who didn't like this movie "Opinions are like a##holes, everybody has one!! If you can't appreciate this film or better yet character studies then you are unfeeling losers anyway

To point out that Harrison Fords character is unsympathetic is like saying Howard The Duck is a classic

So go watch the new Underdog film, because obviously its more your speed

reply

you hate it because there is no CGI garbage you are used to. You have no attention span, and you don't want to think. Go watch Iron Man and Rush Hour, moron.

*spoiler alert*

This was a superb adaptation of a book, and I actually feel the way Allie's death was done in the movie was much better than how it was portrayed in the book. In the book his death seemed really overblown - scavengers tearing his tongue out - hey that's the tongue he was always talking with and now he can't talk, yes, I get it. In the movie he had more humanity in death, which was better, he was not reduced to being an operatic supervillain. The movie death emphasized he was a disturbed egocentric human who had probably been sane once, and that part of his love for his family was genuine; which made it more genuinely affecting and meaningful.

This is certainly not my favorite movie by far, but I don't think it's horrible, just not terribly entertaining. That doesn't, however, mean it wasn't thought provoking. As a parent, I felt horrible for those kids in the movie. As a wife, I was angry at Mother Fox for not having the backbone to stand up to Allie and her willingness to overlook his manic and often irrational behavior. Ford did an excellent job in this. He wasn't his typical likable self, though, and I think many dislike this movie for that reason. This was his favorite role because (I guess) he found it challenging. When he generally portrays a heroic morally upright individual, it's difficult for people to accept him as anything else (i.e. Norman Spencer in What Lies Beneath). If anything else, this is worth seeing to understand a unique perspective and a glimpse at two fine actors (Ford and Phoenix). It's a shame Phoenix never was able to fully actualize his potential.
