So how did they stop it?

What happens in the end? Did it actually eat most of the city folk or did they kill it?

Everyone in NorCal destroyed their closets, therefore eliminating the monster's energy source. It collapsed after being unable to recharge.

Donald Grant

Earlier poster is right - The monster gained his power from 'closets'. Once all closets around the world were destroyed, the monster lost his energy. He 'fell for' the hero (double ententre - closet/gay), and since he couldn't fit into the last surviving closet with his crush - he let love dictate that he would lose energy and die. "It was beauty that killed the beast." said Howard Duff at the end of the film.

Yep, Don-Grant is right on the money.

I actually always felt the ending was rather touching. The monster finds
a single closet left, but can't fit through it with the guy, so opts
to die with him, rather then live without him.

This movie really deserves more credit then it receives. It's a pretty
solid spoof.
