MISSING SCENES?

Was wondering if anyone else noticed some missing scenes from the DVD? Years ago I had a copy from HBO I recorded, and recently bought the DVD, I saw in the alternate versions category the carving the tree scene was in the TV version but I also know it was on the HBO version, but not on the DVD, also the scene when they first move in and puts his foot through the step on the staircase, later referred to in the movie as the step when it all went to ****. Could anyone let me know? This is about the third time I noticed this on DVDs I have purchased lately. Guess maybe it gives the excuse for a directors cut later on, but for a second rate comedy? (Actually think this film is great, but hardly worth a directors edition)

Thank you!

I came on here to post that very question - no, you're not crazy. The major scene I noticed missing was the "first night in the house" scene where Shelley Long is drunk and telling Tom Hanks she couldn't of gotten drunk in Mexico and sung Beatles tunes because she doesn't know any Beatles tunes (setting up the scene where Long's character gets drunk again and thinks afterwards she slept with the orchestra director). Hanks carries her up the staircase, and breaks the tricky step (setting up the scene where Hanks' character attempts to fix the broken step, only to have the entire staircase collapse). I agree, this is a funny movie, but nothing that special to warrant a director's cut - the DVD already touts itself as the "special edition".

They do this because they need to pad out the television version for time, usually, and so they re-insert scenes that were removed from the theatrical cut.

I guess it is the "Special (Cut) Edition" :-)

I did notice one version of the film (on Comedy Central) where the whole scene of Walter going to Benny to borrow the money was cut out and a scene of Walter Ahnna getting drunk together their first night in the house together was added, which was not in the original theatrical version.
