this is how i know a movie isn't nearly as bad as people say

When the discussion board for a 30 year old movie has dozens of comments from just the last few weeks, it can't be nearly as bad as people want to pretend it is. We're still watching it, it's still coming to mind, etc. The large majority of 'good' movies from 20, 30 years ago, are not forgotten but just not thought of. I think of The Money Pit quite often, and although it depends on slapstick much too much, it's still a really funny movie with a lot of great performances.

The fact that it's now on Netflix and Tom Hanks went on to be a huge star, couldn't have hurt!

Knowing what Tom Hanks has done since, I think, makes this performance so much better in retrospect. We've seen him be serious. Honestly, a lot of actors can do that. We've seen him be ridiculous. Not a lot of actors can be so good at both.
