Momo is one of my favorite books, and I'd dearly love to see the film version, but its never been transalted into English! Maybe we English-speaking fans can start a letter-writing campaign?! Let me know if interested!!

I think the original is in English isn't it? It's been a while since I saw it last, but I can't imagine Joh Huston (and others) trying to speak German... so why not release the original?

shareNo, the italian actors speak italian, the english actors speak english and the german actors speak german or english (Armin Müller Stahl's lips were not matching to the german soundtrack, looks very like english). Since many movies back then were produced in MOS (motion shot only - loud but cheap and "lightweight" cameras) in order to be dubbed in a row. Just like Pasolini-Movies. Actors were talking italian or french... and the first version of Salo was the french dubbed one.
Nobody can say what the original language is. Even today there are Productions, like "The Pianoteacher" or "Code: Unknown" from Haneke... mostly produced in french, but there are lots of german spoken parts. It's Europe. It's multilingual. Most actors play better in their native language.
I've seen the film in English. And it didn't seem akward to me. Remember John Huston is in it, I would assume he is speaking English too.

I have a VHS copy of this film which is in English throughout. John Huston's scenes are lip-sync perfect, but the other actors are all dubbed. There's no mention on the credits about the dubbing. This copy was bought in Holland some years ago and is subtitled in Dutch. I've never seen another copy in the UK either DVD or VHS. I also managed to get the soundtrack CD at the same time.

Why aren't English movies in German, or in French or Dutch?
Because they were made in English.
Michael Ende was a German writer. This movie was a German Italian co-production.
So why would they make it in English?
Having said that, i'm sure there is an English dubbed version somewhere around.
And i read on the Momo Facebook page that a new version has been released on DVD to commemorate the 40th Birthday of the book.
