I liked it more for...
the fact that it showed where Jodie Foster was in her career, than for the actual movie. The direction was not great, but the story had potential. The filmmaking itself was sad, sad, sad. The performances were pretty good, but John Lithgow is such a good actor...I feel he was reduced to a loudmouth blowhard, instead of showing the nuances of the larger-than-life character--a characterization which could've been acheived by a more adept director. It just seemed as if all he was doing was yelling, and it became irritating.
Also, I wish there was a bit more background on both these characters. There didn't seem to be enough explanation. With what the audience was furnished, there was barely enough information for supposition. This movie lacked character development and backstory.
