DVD Release!

The Sony Pictures Classics website(http://www.sonyclassics.com/comingsoon.php) has just announced that a collection of 8 Almodovar films is going to be released this Spring. It includes Matador, Law of Desire, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Flower of My Secret, Live Flesh, All About My Mother, Talk to Her, and Bad Education.

I do wish it had more of the older ones instead of the new ones (e.g. Kika and High Heals instead of Talk to Her and Bad Education) since they're so much easier to find. But we mustn't bite, the hand that feeds, must we? So, in that case...

Can I get a "Whoo-hoo!" ?

reply

Yes, a 'whoo-hoo' indeed, but perhaps only a tentative one.

Following the link you posted, it was not quite clear to me whether that collection ('Viva Pedro') referred to an upcoming dvd release or a limited theatrical run, presumably to art-houses.

Part of my confusion stems from looking over some of the other films mentioned, most of which have not yet hit theatres. They mention 'The Passenger', ('70's Jack Nicholson) but they're definitely talking about a theatrical re-release.

Also, in the Pedro listing and others, nowhere do I see them mention 'dvd'. As most press-release-type info tends to overstate things, that seems an unlikely oversight.

If you're expectantly looking for signs of classic Almodovar released to dvd in the US (I know I am!), it would be very easy to see 'collection of 8 Almodovar films' and interpret it as 'dvd boxset'. From what I'm seeing, I don't think so.

If I'm mistaken, I apologize. If you have more details to share, please do so. I'm definitely not trying to rain on anyone's Pedro parade.

I suppose a re-release to theatres can be taken as a positive sign that those films are quite likely to soon be issued on dvd, but I'd guess it won't be Spring of '06. (Though I'd love to be wrong, whoo-hoo.)

Having said all this, I'd love to see that collection as a dvd box, or as individually released titles.
I agree, I'd rather group the older ones together apart from the newer crop...

... and I'd love to catch them again in a theatre, so maybe 'Viva Pedro' will play near me. I just know I have a better track record lately for catching flicks that I can see from my couch.

Well, damn. That makes sense. I did indeed jump the gun, since I'm so hopeful for the release. Oh well, there's still hope, right? Right? RIGHT??!!

Eh... I need an excuse to go to Chicago and see six movies in one day anyway.

Following up - - Maybe there's hope yet. Just spotted at Amazon 'The Pedro Almodovar Classics Collection' with a listed release date of 4/4/06. It says it'll be 4 pieces (not 8), but as of this writing it doesn't give any other pertinent info.

I know I'll be keeping an eye on it...

According to Sony's own website, the DVD collection will only have "All About My Mother" "Talk to Her" "Bad Education" and "Flower of my Secret". Sony Classics website still mentions the Viva Pedro! collection, though this may be a theatrical release and not DVD.

ALL his movies are out on dvd in europe. Try getting or exchanging those with someone from Europe, (mail me) they can be easily formatted to region 1.

Most of his movies are available in the UK (not in Spain or France though), there are currently 3 box sets, some are out individually. I'd get those while they're still available, and don't depend on any future American releases, the US studios are hopeless where foreign films are concerned, they are treated as an afterthought. Getting a region free player in the US is easier than you think, there are several models available, I recommend the Philips DVP642, Circuit City sells it.

They are also having a contest in which you can win the 8 DVD collection on the Sony Classics site. The Grand Prize is a trip to Spain, plus the collection and a poster. First prize is the DVD collection, 2nd prize is the poster.

Now, I don't mind a trip to Spain, but I would LOVE the collection even more!

Just got the 9 DVD set and it is very nice. Actual titles are "Women on the Verge", "All About My Mother". "Talk to Her", "The Flower of My Secret", "Live Flesh", "Law of Desire", "Matador", "Bad Education", and a bonus disc.

Sony did a nice job with the package, and "Women on the Verge" and "All Abut My Mother" were re-mastered for this set.

Pedro Festival coming up at my house.

I bought a copy of Kika on ebay a while ago, because it was impossible to rent, and was pretty dissapointed. It was full of ALmodovar's style, but it lacked his cohesive elements, which cause a viewer to be completely emersed in the plot, as well as the sweetness that even some of his harshest movies carry with them.

While some of his movies are available on Sony Classics, and I wholeheartedly hope this becomes one, a cheaper aletrnative for hard to finds ones are Brasilian releases on DVD. Much better quality than the Asian versions which usually have a viewing area 60% the size of the original.

reply

Brazilian releases have no extras, but they're really cheap... not to mention, "all" zones.

My mother (who is a HUGE Antonio fan) bought this collection and needless to say, she was SHOCKED!! I had NOOOOOO idea that Antonio did soft-core GAY movies. Before you buy this collection get ready for the shock of your life if you love ANTONIO!!!
