Is there a legal reason that this hasn't been released on DVD in the US?

I have made a copy of this for my own use from an import tape that I got off Ebay but I'd really like to buy a good commercially released copy. It doesn't seem to have been released anywhere.

Does this have anything to do with Antonio Banderas being in it?

The VHS is now out of print. I think they are gearing up to release it on DVD. I hope so. One of my favorites. They have released some other earlier ones now. It better be good. I hate when DVDs take so long to come out and they suck.

You can get the Brasilian DVD release on ebay. I believe the subtitles are only Portugues or off, it is better quality than the tape, though.

Its been released officially in Spain, with quite a good transfer and crisp sound. It was also a free giveawy film with spanish newspaper sunday edition "el pais", as a part of Almodovar's collection featuring all the his pictures.
What I can say is if it is or is not regionally encoded (europe: zone 2)
They are quite common in spanish fleamarkets and maybe from WWW.ES.EBAY.COM.
As well the same edition without "el pais" cover artwork, is widely available in any well provided dvd store. If in Spain, try "el corte ingles", "madrid rock" or "fnac".
Brazilian editions are usually poor editions with pale transfers and wrong soundmixes. You'd better avoid them unless you are desperately looking for a film
Good luck

This is the latest movie to be rated NC-17 by the MPAA. Being that the theatrical release was in the 80's, this rating is most likely because they are about to release it to DVD. Also, note that the distributor listed on the MPAA website is none other than Sony Pictures Classics, the same distributor that just released The Flower Of My Secret on DVD several months ago.

Superdude is right. Sony will probably announce the films DVD release any day now.

It is coming. January 2007, Sony will release The Pedro Almodovar Classics Collection. "Matador" is included.

if you have a multi-region player. Matador (and nearly all of almodovars films) has been available on DVD for years in the U.K.

You can buy "The Pedro Almodovar Collection" which contains 8 movies including Matador. Very good deal.

The movie has been released on DVD in the US on Nov. 3 (just a few days ago). This is probably a marketing strategy for the upcoming release of Almodovar's lateste movie- "The Broken Embraces".

I'm glad that they have the DVD. I love the movie so much that I have 2 DVD copies in addition to a VHS copy I made many years ago. Hope that you managed to get it.

I did get it- thanks! It's one of my favorite Almodovar films. Enjoy!
