Sewing Anyone?

I love the scene where Ugolin sews the ribbon. It's so creepy. I loved the whole movie and also Jean De Florette

Yes it is creepy, After the first movie i knew Ugolin to act quite strange but did not think of him as being that much of a weirdo to sew a ribbon onto himself

Good movie though

Yes, that scene freaked me out.

"Hey, STELLA!"

our french teacher explained to us that during that time they believed that if you had something of the person you liked and sewed it on to your skin it like made them love you or soemthing

reply

... that's just creepy. I saw the movie in class a few days ago and it turned my stomach.

He likes to dance alot

I do?

I agree. Very difficult to look especially if you are of a squeamish disposition. I can safely say that Ugolin has gone completely crazy because of his love for Manon. I think she should go for the teacher guy myself.

I agree, but I would rather her go with Ugolin. I mean, he wasn't that bad. In fact, he was kinda cute until he became all suicidal and kinda sketchy.

there was a groan that spread through the classroom at that scene. haha. it was gross, but the symbolism was pretty cool.

the movie(s) was/were fantastic and i wish i could find them so i could watch them again. french 3 was about 2, 3 years ago...hahaha.

When I saw it I was like DO YOU HAVE TO PUT IT THERE?? It was horrible. To think of the amount of horror films I've watched and rolled my eyes at, a scene in a cute little French film is enough to make me shudder every time I think of it :(

Thanks for your explanation for I always wondered why he sewed that ribbon of hers to his
(gulp!) nipple.

I guessed it was rooted in some old French wives tale or similar superstition. So your post definitely confirms this, since I never took a French class. And I now sorely regret it!
Never too late to learn, right?!

It is truly squeamish to watch, but the symbolism portrayed was heartbreaking and fit
so wonderfully into Ugolin's erratic behaviour.

Beautiful movie as was the initial chapter, Jean de Florette. Watching both made me track
down the book and completely absorb it. Truly heartwrenching tale.

Thanks again,

i thought it was gross. weirdo ugolin. (i saw it in french class like so many others...) i actually felt bad for him though... he was sweet in a sad pathetic way. only when he said that manon's ribbon "burned him"-- no DUH!!!! that's what you get when ya sew a friggin RIBBON onto your SKIN!!!! jeez, for a rich person you'd think he'd get a proper education and some common sense...

reply

Unfortunately I'm pretty sqeamish about some things and I still can't watch that bit!

reply

I don't mind admitting that I had to close my eyes after the first few seconds. I really couldn't take it. And I won't be looking the next time I watch these two movies either.
