*Spolier Alert* Cesar's face when he's talking to the old woman...


... and she tells him that the child was a hunchback, was easily the best bit of acting, without actually saying anything, there has ever been. So tragic.

Yep, Montand gave a superb performance in the films - particularly the final 10 minutes. The conversation with the blind woman is unforgettable.


That is a masterpiece of understatement.

It took me a while to see this movie, but I'd wanted to for a while thanks to Roger Ebert's beautiful review of it and "Jean de Florette". He mentioned that the villain's punishment is perfectly, even cruelly, suited to his crimes. I wondered just what that punishment could be, and when I saw the film, I agreed whole-heartedly with Ebert's writing. One of the greatest twists to a film that I've ever seen.
