Manhunter.

Both are great, but I prefer Manhunter. Overall, it was much more suspenseful, eerie, had better actors (though Fiennes was great in Red Dragon), and the soundtrack was much more memorable.

Red Dragon - FTW!
MH - give me 2 hrs of my life back!

Manhunter look cheesy as hell, that Hannibal is plain ridiculous, looks like a taxi driver got invited into a filming set and asked to read some lines. Dollarhyde is wooden and cliche. The theme of the painting is glazed over. The only good thing is nice 80s music (not fitting the mood, however) and some attempts to show the emotions of investigator. (though when he starts randomly clenching and yelling it looks funny and over-the-top). Reeba in MH is a cardboard cutout, entirely no character.
RD was awesome, by favourite of all, in some ways better than Silence. The mystery, the mansion, the rituals, the psycho who looks like a totally normal individual (which makes it all scary, not that MH Dollarhyde who looks like a freak-clown and you can see him as a villain a mile ahead).

Face it. In years, filmmaking has progressed. Yeah, I know, it's painful to learn that the movie you liked has been obsoleted, but it's true. RD is just more fun and exciting to watch, period.

Red Dragon is a model of wasted potential. It has zero texture, zero style, and turns Edward Norton into a terrible actor. Its very existence is a mystery. In no way is it fun, or for that matter, superior to Manhunter, I don't care how many layers of "glaze" are applied to the painting subplot.

And you say it's better than Silence of the Lambs now too, eh? Is that also because "filmmaking has progressed"?

Differences of opinion are all well and good. But the portion of your post that I've quoted above is either the most ingenious piece of trolling I've ever seen, or cinematic ignorance that stands out even here, in the wilderness that is IMDb. I know that's harsh, but jesus, kid.

Absolutely, the whole cast seem to be decent actors who are phoning it in.None more so than Norton, who clearly didn't bother to find out a lot about the Will Graham character.Hopkins is just terrible too.It was as if he was playing a caricature of his original version of Lecter, the way he ladles on extra snarling menace makes me wonder how he took direction seriously.

How bizarre it is that he's playing a younger Lecter than he did in The Silence of the Lambs but he has actually aged and spread a good deal since he filmed it!

Its very existence is a mystery.

I agree it's unnecessary, probably made to create a neat trilogy with Hopkins in place as Lecter.

Well I'd say Red Dragon is pretty terrible, but was intended to be fun to watch! If that's what someone got from it,that's quite strange.
For me it's unforgivable that the moment Will realises the killer has seen the films is almost a non event in Red Dragon. It's perhaps the pivotal moment, completely wasted.

Manhunter on every level. Red Dragon is good as well, but Manhunter does everything much better.
