John Tassopoulos' Death?

At the end of the film, with David Parker's and Nadia Tass' commentary turned on, David gives a tribute to Nadia's brother John, who was the inspiration for the character of Malcolm.

He says that John "was killed" two years before.

Does anybody know anything about this very tragic sounding death?
Note that he didn't say he died, he said he was killed.
