Locker Room Scene......dated or not?

Since the movie didn't have any gay or bi characters, we don't get to see how Lucas would react to someone who was gay or bi. In the locker room, he uses homophobia against the bully, but is that just a representation of life, as homophobia still exists, especially in those situations, or is this dated?

Is this another movie trope that excludes people? I'm upset when old movies have tiny amounts of sexism, even though I know it's apart of the time it's from, because there were women who suffered from it and I still face sexism. So how does another group feel, when it's them?

I don't think it's completely dated. Unfortunately sexuality is still something you can hold over someones head. However, the chance of a gay, and open athlete, being in that scene today is much higher.

I wouldn't say its dated, I'm sure the same type of "gay ribbing" happens in locker rooms today among younger guys even tho locker room hijinks have changed since then: the whole muscle rub on the crotch thing would probably not happen today because it would be seen as "too homo" for one of the alpha males to place his actual hands on the junk of even a beta male like Lucas. Today's norms are way scared of doing anything that is "too gay"

I think homophobia, like Lucas's insult to that bully, still happen, but I was thinking it might be dated for any film today to have that insult be cool.

Dear lord what has happened to this country. It wasn't cool or not cool. Criminy. Insults like that happen. It's not homophobia. It's just guy stuff for crying out loud.

reply

But why is being gay an insult?

reply

That's just the way it is for straight guys. I am not saying it's right or wrong. It's how guys interact. Judging by your screen name I gather you are not a guy. You will never understand. I can talk until my face is blue and you won't get. Just like I won't understand some things that women do. It's just the way it is.

reply

This is why I like older movies better because everyone is walking on egg shells today with all this PC garbage.

Calling a straight man gay or using some nasty term is the biggest insult and the quickest way for two guys to have a fist fight. That's just the way it is

You live in a fantasy land. This scene would still play out in a modern day locker room. There will always be bias and bigotry between people and no amount of feel good rhetoric will change that. The bias will change from culture and time to time but it will always be there.

As far as getting upset? Seriously? There's governments that allow the open execution of people who are homosexuals and a little crude locker room humor upsets you? Unreal.

What Lucas says is portrayed as cool. Yes, some countries are worse, but homophobia sucks for gay, bi, and pansexual people, with something like getting executed or like this.

I know these exchanges happen, but I was wondering if it would be written today or written in the same way to get us thinking it's cool.
