That kid would be diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome today

I'm always compiling lists of famous people as well as fictional characters with Asperger's. Lucas is on my list of fictional characters. He's nerdy, klutzy, socially inept, has limited obsessive interests, but is very smart. Today I wonder what Lucas would be doing. Maybe he became a scientist specializing in insect research.

reply

Maybe he became the 35 year old virgin.

It's not a lie if you believe it.

Most Autists have severe learning difficulties so being smart isnt a good indicator.

yes, but most Aspies don't have the associated LD's that autistic kids do.

My brother has Asperger's Syndrome, with all the classic symptoms, and Lucas is nothing like him.

reply

I also have a like brother. I agree. Lucas was far too outgoing and sociable. He may have just been a dork with a high IQ. There are many out there like that ;)

reply

Absolutely! Lucas was just a normal, shy, smart kid.

reply

Lucas is socially inept with the "popular" crowd, but he seems to have an ok interaction with the other so called "dorks".

Also, according to the diagnostic criteria for Asperger's Syndrome, Lucus should have, "a lack of spontaneous seeking to share enjoyment, interests, or achievements with other people (e.g. by a lack of showing, bringing, or pointing out objects of interest to other people)".
However, Lucas is quick to share his passions with other people. He shares information about the insects with the jocks in the car after the movie (not to mention the main female character. He also shares his love of classical music and such with the main female character.
Plus, Lucas doesn't have the stereotyped, repetative movements characteristic with this Syndrome.

I just don't think Lucas has Asperger's...sorry

reply

Yes. He's definitely not socially inept.

Symptoms during adolescent and teen years

Most symptoms persist through the teen years, and although teens with Asperger's can begin to learn those social skills they lack, communication often remains difficult. They will probably continue to have difficulty "reading" others' behavior.

Your teen with Asperger's syndrome (like other teens) will want friends but may feel shy or intimidated when approaching other teens. He or she may feel "different" from others. Although most teens place emphasis on being and looking "cool," trying to fit in may be frustrating and emotionally draining for teens with Asperger's. They may be immature for their age and be naive and too trusting, which can lead to teasing and bullying.

All of these difficulties can cause teens with Asperger's to become withdrawn and socially isolated and to have depression or anxiety.3

However, some teens with Asperger's syndrome are able to make and keep a few close friends through the school years. Some of the classic Asperger's traits may also work to the benefit of your teen. Teens with Asperger's are typically uninterested in following social norms, fads, or conventional thinking, allowing creative thinking and the pursuit of original interests and goals. Their preference for rules and honesty may lead them to excel in the classroom and as citizens.

Lucas was more socially active and fit in better than I do, even. I mean, how many nerds do you know that have the jocks on their side?

If that's how you judge autism, my friends and I must be autistic! JK, we're just plain old nerds, and I think that's what Lucas was...just a very cool nerd if anything. The fact that he even got to TALK with Maggie (Kerri Green) is a huge step up from anywhere I've ever gotten.

Okay, enough being a loser. I was just trying to prove a point...he's just a dork.

I watched part of Lucas last night, he was actually pretty social and outgoing. Compared to say...Napoleon Dynamite or some of the people in Trekkies for example, where you could tell...its almost painful to watch.

Although Lucas could be annoying and a pain, I think that hurt him with the girls. But alot of "confidence" with women, is just your own attitude about things. In how you carry yourself.

I actually have Asperger's Syndrome and I DON'T LIKE THE WAY THAT YOU SPELL IT THAT WAY VMF-1 because that's very disrespectful, obnoxious & ignorant! I don't believe that Lucas had Asperger Syndrome because he wanted to date Maggie, he did have friends (even though they may have been dorks) most in the band. Actually, before Maggie came into the picture, CAPPIE was the only jock that stood up for him. He did have unusual interests for a teenager. He did share his interest in Locusts with other kids but he didn't go on and on about it that it annoyed people like some Asperger people I know.

I mean it's possible to be socially awkward and not have Asperger Syndrome. I think that's the way it was for Lucas in this movie. I think that in Lucas's case, he had a few traits of Asperger's Syndrome but he didn't have it completely. I also don't think that just because you're in a band, in the glee club or some activity that's not as popular as some others, doesn't necessarily mean that you're a geek, dork or whatever. Now, I was somewhat like Lucas in high school and to make a long story short, I wasn't diagnosed until I was 34 which is a late diagnosis. I was born in 1972 and in the U.S at the time they only knew about Classic Autism which I didn't have. Instead based on tests when I was very young and other stuff, the doctors told my parents they though I had ADD or mild mental retardation. My parents & I humored the doctors because my Mom was a teacher before I was born and knew I didn't have either of those things. I mean we knew I had special needs but this country didn't discover about Asperger's Syndrome until about the mid nineties. Since then, A LOT OF CHILDREN HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH ASPERGER'S SYDNDROME.

reply

Big whoop. It seems like EVERY kid these days is diagnosed with something. Remember just being awkward and socially inept without having some malady attached to it?

"We gotta get even with those Socs! Let's do it for Johnny, man. We'll do it for Johnny!"

reply

Now that I think about it. It seems like Lucas came off more as some stalkerish psychotic teen who was overly obsessed with a girl instead of someone who was in love.

reply

What is it with people obsession with Asperger all of a sudden. And none of you seem to have the slightest clue what it is. Lucas was just an awkward nerdy teen. Not every strange kid, or nerdy guy has a syndrome. Jesus Christ.

Why are people so quick to slap a label on others. "They don't fit in so there must be something wrong with them"

reply

Exactly. Like an above poster I am tired of every person that is different in some way as having some kind of disorder. Look, some people are just weird or different but it's because they choose to be that way because that is how they like to live their life.
