this has bugged me for 25 years - who is the painting of orin's mother supposed to be/look like? i feel like it's a joke i never got.

That's actually actress Pam Ferris as Orin's mother. Of course, she would eventually get her turn playing a villain herself as Miss Agatha Trunchbull in Matilda.

Yeah I think it was just supposed to be that she was an old witchy looking woman.

I don't think there was a joke there to get. Interesting that the picture was Pam Ferris though.
