Dislike: contrived, unoriginal and very hard to swallow material (it's one of those movies where the only real novelty is how they fit the prefabricated story parts together). Tries to be a romantic comedy and a murder mystery set in both the New York art world and the legal profession, with enough of an emphasis on action to have a couple of huge fires and explosions, but unlike 'Ghostbusters' (the director's previous film) the various elements never gel. Robert Redford remains charming as hell, but he just kind of genially smiles his way through the movie; it's not one of his more forceful characters.

Like: It's made with enough professionalism, and strong enough actors, that it's entertaining anyway (it's also one of those movies where star power goes a long way, because it has to). The movie's sense of entertainment is good line by line and even scene by scene, even if it never adds up to a great whole. Debra Winger makes the most out of her material and is often quite funny. The New York art world is a neat setting, and it's kind of fun to see a movie based loosely on the infamous case of the Mark Rothko estate.

In the end it's something you'd be happy to watch on a rainy Sunday afternoon, but I wouldn't run out to see it on a Friday night. It's hard to hate, but also difficult to have very many strong feelings about in any direction.

Oh, okay, ha ha. Sorry, mostly when people write "oh" with nothing else it's a snarky way of, like, rolling their eyes through text.

Other movies like this? Hm. Going to cast kind of a wide net, but:

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (original, skip the remake) - really fun movie about a robbery in New York that involves an elaborate plan where the group takes a subway car and everyone in it hostage, then keeps it rolling down the track. Great suspense, very clever scheme that we find out more about as the movie goes along, good ending and funny detail about 1970s NYC.

Manhattan Murder Mystery - My husband and I have trouble sitting through Woody Allen movies nowadays because he seems to be such a sleaze in real life (we're not taking a stand or anything, we just can't help it), but even then we can't resist seeing this one again every once in a while. Allen and Diane Keaton are a married couple who have a friendly acquaintance with another, older married couple in the same apartment building. The wife dies suddenly, and then Keaton starts getting suspicious of the husband, either because he murdered her or because she's bored with life and looking for something to occupy her time. This one is hilarious, and the movie's sort of ingenious in the way the mystery plot (which is solid stuff) is intertwined with the story of the main characters' relationship.

The Object of Beauty - I didn't love this one, but a lot of people do. A posh couple living in an expensive London hotel are trying (not very well) to cover up the fact that they're broke and unable to pay the thousands of pounds they owe. They have one valuable thing left—a small statuette—and decide to have it "stolen" so they can collect the insurance and get out of the hole. But then it actually is stolen, and they're surprised at how they react to that. No real mystery in this one, but a lot of funny observations about the same sort of snooty people and attitudes toward art wandering around the edges of 'Legal Eagles.'

That's all off the top of my head, but if I think of any more I'll let you know!

I know what you mean. I just typed "oh," because I was too lazy to type that day. LOL

I type way too much & I was just trying to edit myself vs. going into a big spill about my thoughts. LOL

Thanks, for your feedback because those sound like interesting movies.

Only if by Paper Chase you mean chasing toilet paper. Then yes, it's better than chasing toilet paper. But only if that toilet paper has been used.

Otherwise, no, it's not as good; it shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as The Paper Chase. You should be imprisoned for 5 years just for having done so. With no supper.

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.
