Reporters - Uniforms?

What was the 'reporter' system during WW2 - the 'press' conferences were with about 40 people in the film - all in uniform. (A few seemed to be British).

If all Army people - why would there need to be 40 different 'stories' - government bodies usually have only ONE 'story.'

I can't exactly answer your question. But reporters were embedded with the troops - and when you're travelling with them, it's better to blend in with them. They wore "uniforms", but not with any rank, insignia, decorations, or anything on them - except for "US" on the lapel, and that they were press on the arm just below the shoulder.

But that scene where Bedell Smith is facing a roomful of the press is exaggerated. They're all dressed far too spiffily. They would have been much more rumpled than that. What they were wearing in that scene came directly from central wardrobe, cleaned and pressed.

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

war correspondents wore uniforms but still worked for their newspapers.
They did not all report exactly the same story but all their stories were subject to censorship.

You could make a good film about a war correspondent maybe Alan Moorehead?
