in 1986, this movie was too smart, too scary for theathers. But i saw this Day One on VHS. Can't wait to get my 4K UHD copy.

I’m amused by the “suggestion” that it was too smart for 1980’s audiences, though. Typically, audiences from back in the good ol’ days love to smugly claim that only THEY got and understood mature fantasy/science fiction/most movies back in the day. And it’s funny cuz a number of these people are the same people who ate up so many terrible 80’s sequels (which they remember fondly through nostalgic eyes) and b-movie crapssics. Lol!
Fact is, beloved films that were overlooked when they were first released were given new life after being embraced by future generations. That has to tell you something.
Was it marketed towards a kiddie audience?
Because it has a standard fairy-tale plot, but a very adult tone. And David Bowie is just too sexy for a "family" film.
I didn't like this movie as a kid because of David Bowie. I much preferred The Dark Crystal. I didn't find it scary, was just a little creeped out by it.

I saw this movie in theaters when it came out. Yes, that makes me old. I didn't find it scary, but I was probably 13 at the time ... since it came out in 1986.
shareFirst of all, it's not scay at all! Not that I know what 'scayism' is, but it seems the movie can't be 'scay'.
In the remotely unlikely case that you meant to type 'scary' but typed 'scay' and didn't correct it for some reason, you're still wrong, because theaters can't feel fear. So a movie can't be too 'scary' for theaters.
A movie COULD be 'too scary' (however you measure this) for audiences, people, groups, entities, etc., but it can't be too scary for THEATERS.
