What an alien movie!
Next to no violence. Next to no special effects. No flashy spaceships, cyborgs or lasers. Not even a cleavage-girl/"love interest". But it has political, societal and philosophical humour and a great character composition.
This is far away from Hollywood Sci-Fi and so much more 'normal' Sci-Fi, exploring alien places, culture and concepts.
It is so sad, that so many people are alienated by such movies, because they think Sci-Fi must consist of aliens, spaceships and the disintegration of both by 'future weaponry'.
It is a journey of two guys thrown into a hostile, unknown environment.
Neither the hero nor the viewer knows what is going to happen next, but with time learns about the workings of the society, its danger and even the vocabulary. And the heroes react rationally to all of them! What a concept!
In the end I felt sympathy for the former dicks/enemies and loved the two earthlings. They were competent, yet flawed. Rational yet human. Bold and ballsy but gentle and loyal. Confident and remorseful. But there was no contradiction, everything seemed proper depending on the situation.
Oftentimes I thought stuff, which the heroes did moments later like "the culture is based on strength. Stand up for yourself. Be aggressive!", "Oh *beep* an ecilops. Better duck.", "He is alone. Distract him and get his weapon.", "Call the cops on the two dicks" or the pure "wtf, man?" when one of the aliens explained why he wanted to own a planet.
I felt so much inside the story, because I had all the information as the heroes did and at least one of them had my mindset in every situation. What an immersion!
Paired with the pure polarity between all concepts (deadly world/hope, inhuman society/humanitarian mindset, slapstick humour/philosophical sarcasm, high technology/barbaric standards) and the cool one-liners this was the best Sci-Fi movie I've seen in at least two years and the best movie this year.
And whoever disagrees has not seen my yellow pants. Kyu tourists!
