Anyone remember any of the old media hype for Karate Kid II?

When i was a little kid when Karate Kid II was about to be released in theaters and for VHS, I remember vividly that HBO back then had a short behind the scenes preview for Karate Kid II and they showed the scene where Myagi fought Sato and his buddies and Myagi had the spear in his hand and was going to stab Sato but broke the spear. That's what I remember back then.

So I was wondering if there were any other media hype or promo previews for Karate Kid Part II back in the day?

reply

nooo clue, but I love these movies, they are some of my favourite movies. I was not born when these movies came out, I was born in the 90's, so I would also like to know so... could anyone help urrutiap and I out? anyone know about the media hype and has direct links?

reply

Thanks for your support, dude. Back then HBO did have some short behind the scenes look at some movies such as Nightmare on Elm Street 3, Karate Kid Part 2 and some shows that came on like Glory Days which was a cool show back then.

Its just that I dont remember much about them anymore which is the problem.

Also HBO back then they had some behind the scenes costume design for Return of the Jedi where they dealt with Salicious Crumb and someone goofing off by chasing everyone around by wearing a Gamorrean outfit

reply

No problem dude, and that's neat, I would like to see behind the scenes clips from Nightmare on Elm Street 3 too. Yeah I looked for info on Google briefly last night, but so far I haven't found anything. If I do, I will for sure let you know!

reply

I hate sounding like a broken record when it comes to cool old stuff like this, but I thought it was cool but a bit scary to see that one preview clip on HBO when they had a preview/behind the scenes special for Karate Kid 2 to show up in theaters. That one scene where Miyagi is protecting Daniel from Chosen and his buddies where the spear is involve

reply

yeah, I would love to see that! especially since I wasn't even around to see it when HBO showed it. I wish I was, because stuff like this is so hard to find.

reply

I remember the promos being rather one-sided and bias. Although Miyagi broke the spear I seem to recall the scene where Daniel attempts to murder Chozen with the spear!

"Aaahhh Daniel San, you all wet behind the rectum" - Mr Mifagay

reply

Yeah, attempted murder is a running theme in these movies.

KK1) The Kai forcing Daniel into tumbling down the steep hill on his bike.
KK1) Daniel soaking Johnny whilst listening to an electrical device.
KK1) Miyagi trying to drown Daniel when he tipped him off the boat.
KK2) Miyagi trying to murder Daniel when teaching him the drum technique.
KK3) Barnes and co actions at Devils Cauldron.
KK3) Kreese trying to give Daniel a heart attack in the Cobra Kai Dojo.

I'm sure there are plenty more examples.

Jeez how was this series of horror movies not rated 18.

reply

yeah...my older brother pushed me in the pool yesterday.

i should have charged him with attempted murder.

reply

Did he? The twat!

hey urrutiap, I hope this helps, I have found this which if you skip to about 5:16 it has a bit of behind the scenes footage from kk part 2 http://youtu.be/iYfKML4g7Vw i have also found this, an entire behind the scenes rehearsal of kk 1 http://youtu.be/EZQkwpqFN2E I hope to find some more behind the scenes footage

reply

Wow. Thanks.

It is really hard to even try to find old 1980s behind the scenes stuff from HBO for movies whether its Karate Kid 2, Star Wars or even that western movie Draw!

reply

ya I know, I was amazed that I even found this stuff. The behind the scenes rehearsal footage was from the director John G. Avildsen's channel on youtube. keep checking his channel, as I do, because people are asking for more behind the scenes footage and the full rehearsal of kk2 and you never know he might post them! Also there is this website where you can find cast, pics, locations, soundtrack, trivia, and my favorite, missing scenes from both kk1 and kk2. http://www.fast-rewind.com/kkid/ I hope to find more, if I do I'll let you know

I was 9 when this movie came out and I remember the hype quite well. You have to understand, sequels were an event back then--especially of movies that we had seen numerous times. We had seen Karate Kid 1 so many times by the time KK2 came out that we were dying for a "new" version of it.

You also could not turn on the radio for more than three minutes without hearing the Peter Cetera song-- and MTV played the video of it. A lot. (The video, as you recall, has scenes of the movie. I remember being somewhat shocked the first time I saw it because the final fight looked so brutal compared to that of the first movie.)

I do not remember anything on HBO but that doesn't mean I didn't watch one of those "making of" featurettes they used to do.

So yeah, the country was pretty much psyched for Karate Kid 2. My friend and I saw it on the first or second day it was released. I'm sure I saw it at least once or twice more that summer. I also had a promotional magazine for the movie, the book/novelization and a couple of the action figures.

Between this movie and Space Camp (Leaaaa Thompsonnnnn!) the summer of '86 was a great time to be a kid!

reply

oh lordy lol. Dont even mention Space Camp. Back then I loved that movie for whatever reasons back then. Back then a time when Jaquin Pheonix was not know back then.

Odd Jobs, Karate Kid 2, Platoon, Three O Clock High, Lost Boys they all had some HBO media hype back then and I loved it alot back then lol.

That and Fraggle Rocka and the spooky Hitchhiker tv anthology show which was a ltitle weird at times.

That short HBO first look or whatever it was called back in the day is included as a bonus feature on the KK II DVD from 2004.

dp2008, that's a spot-on comparison. That Summer I remember going to King's Island (An amuesment park here in South/West Ohio) which is about an hour away. Between the ride there and back we heard "Glory of love" at least four times between the various radio stations.

'Cause there's thunder in your heart... every move is like lightning!

HBO hyped the movies they produced, but I don't think "The Karate Kid Part II" was one of them.

reply

Well hbo did hype up karate kid part 2 back then. Mid late 1980s the best time for HBO back then

Mid late 1980s the best time for HBO back then

^Truth.

Also, multiple showings of the movie "Just One of the Guys" which I'm convinced HBO ran on a constant loop at the same time every day.

When there's no more room in Hollywood, remakes shall walk the Earth.

reply

It was Chozen who Miyagi was fighting in that scene; not Sato.

reply

can't say i recall.

🎍Season's greetings!🎅🌲

Leonard Maltin famously said that Part 2 was clearly "for kids" -- and that it was a step back from the great story of part One.
The love story of Daniel and Ali was worlds above the kumiko stuff. And in part 3 it was even more of a joke with Robyn Lively!

So: a realistic, down to earth show..which is completely off the wall swarming with magic robots?!
