80's - age of safety

I didn't realize until watching this years later. At the end of the movie when Holly and Sam are driving Sandy and Steven home from the hospital, nobody is wearing their seatbelt (you can see Sam and Holly's undone above the seat) and Sandy is holding her infant in her lap.

Nowadays, seatbelts strap you in automatically like a spider web or that metal statue of liberty scene from X-Men. Your car "yells" at you if you forget to strap in. Infants have to be in a composite-plastic trap in the middle of the back seat at a precise, obtuse angle with a DOT approved chair that doesn't allow for mobiles or play toys or the slight movement of their head.

LOL, big! I didn't notice that, but I think seat belt laws (are the federal or state) didn't really become a public issue until the late 1980s. I graduated from high school in 1988, and I know I was a stickler for my seat belt (and yelled at my parents to wear theirs) by the time I was driving in 1986.

"Psychos do not explode when sun light hits them, I don't give a *beep* how crazy they are!"

This movie came out in '86.
I remember debating the possibility of a seat belt law in a speech class in '84 or '85.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw Ted Danson and Sam Waterston in the car together. Then, not surprisingly, the first had a car crash and died...
