Red wine -- Jean's downfall?

Why does Papet say that Jean drinking red wine will be his downfall, while the white wine that Jean drinks with Ugolin is non consequential? (Ugolin says that he bonded with Jean whilst drinking white wine with Jean.) Seems to me that white and red wine are equally inebriating, for me at least :-)

I always thought it was to do with the colour. "Red Wine" symbolised blood or family ties whereas "white wine" was a symbol of Gold, wealth or avarice and was meant to be a dramatic irony.

Isnt it because the cheapest wine is red? And therefore, what he wanted to say is that he isnt buying good wine anymore, therefore he's going broke. Not there there isnt some real good and expensive red wine, and correct me If I'm wrong, but I beleive, the cheapest "brands" of wine are all red.

Well, at least here in my country, and nowadays, I dont know how it was there and back then.
