mule

Maybe someone has already discussed this, but why didn't Jean mortgage his property and buy a mule before he lost his crops and rabbits? Sounds like a mule could've gotten them enough water to get by, although it would've been difficult? Is it just that he apparently didn't think of this in time?

He was full of ideas, but they didn't all come at once. Initially, the idea of selling was furthest from his mind, but when the subject was brought up, it gave him the idea of mortgaging his land. Sounds plausible to me.

He acted surprised when told how much the land might be worth. Surprising for a tax collector, but as already pointed out, he simply wasn't thinking about risking the land. He may have been surprised at the amount or just because it was the first time he'd even thought about the value.

I can only imagine how much that land is worth now, just a few miles from the Mediterranean coast ...
