This and its sequel should be seen as one film.

Not two separate films.

Yes, I agree. The only thing I want to say now is Vive la France!!

I showed "Jean De Florette" to my family; my sister + Dad fell asleep, my mum didn't like the fact that Jean died at the end and my brother thought it was crap because "it seemed really pointless". Now they won't watch "Manon Des Sources", their loss!

Jean De Florette is the better one, I feel it does an excellent job setting up and hinting at some of the major themes and incidents which will come up in Manon Des Sources, which is a bit less focused but closes out the story wonderfully well, the ending was a real knockout.

I watched them back-to-back, and I fully agree. The first film raises questions that the sequel answers fully. And both are excellent for different reasons.

I usually watch them back-to-back, as I am doing at present - they add up to one magnficent tragic drama.

Yes - I watched them (both for the first time) back-to-back last evening and enjoyed them thoroughly. And that's the way I'll watch them in future as well.
